There are a lot of questions on any parents list when planning a trip to South Africa with kids. There is one for sure on the very top!

Is it safe to travel South Africa with kids ? Yes it is!

We have been to South Africa 3 times and will go back this November (2018) for the 1st time with the children. And believe me I would not take my kids anywhere if I had just the slightest of doubts whether it is safe. This time  we have chosen to stay all the way south on the Garden Route.

South Africa is beautiful and there is lots to do and to see. To mention just a few.

  • Beaches
  • Animals
  • Mountains
  • Cities
  • Small Towns
  • Sand dunes

And all of this can be experienced along the Garden Route in South Africa Road trip. read more here

What to consider when Travelling with Children in South Africa

Driving distances in South Africa

South Africa is very large, and the distances from the north to the south, or west coast to the east coast are large.
From Cape Town along the famous Garden Route to Port Elizabeth is  664km.

I believe a good itinerary should include your points of interests plus interesting and fun things for the children.

Car hire in South Africa is a must

The Garden Route is along the bottom part of South Africa. You can chose for example to go from west to east on the beach road and back more inland. This way you will cover most of the attractions. I recommend to have a minimum of 2-3 different accommodations for a 2 week trip and more if you want to go all the way to Port Elizabeth.

African Health

Malaria
I would not recommend to go to the north of South Africa with younger kids, i.e Krüger National Park. They do have Malaria cases, and why would you want to take the risk? Save this trip for later on.

Believe me the south has also great Game viewing to offer.

Have I inspired you? Another great point is that South Africa is quite cheap compared to other countries.
