In this 10-day Iceland itinerary we will concentrate on a self-drive tour of the Golden Circle and the South Coast of Iceland. We visited Iceland in October and it was amazing.

We will uncover the best places of the Land of Fire and Ice on a road trip along the south part of the ring road to explore the most amazing beautiful waterfalls, canyons, hot springs, endless beaches and impressive glaciers.

There are so many different Iceland itineraries available on the net so why another one? I felt that an Iceland itinerary for families needs to be slightly different and when travelling with children some specific factors need to be considered.

Although we do cover most of the popular spots and bucket list sightseeing locations, but also areas that are lesser known and visited.

Family-friendly 10-Day Iceland itinerary – Black Sand Beach

For who is this self-drive Iceland itinerary?

I have put together this comprehensive Iceland itinerary especially for families with younger kids, to help you have the best ever holiday in this most amazing country.

And I can already answer your questions. Is Iceland fun for families and is Iceland a great family destination? YES, it is!

Of course, anybody can (and should) follow this beautiful itinerary along the Icelandic roads. But if you do not travel to Iceland with kids, you should know that this itinerary is NOT packed with endless sightseeing stops, early morning starts, and long days.

We also like to enjoy our holidays, have lazy mornings and if something doesn’t fit into the plan then so be it. We’ll just have to come back.

But in general, this itinerary should appeal to those families who enjoy adventure and the outdoors. Iceland, known as the land of ice and fire, is a country of contrasts, and not only the landscape but also the weather.

A road trip through Iceland in October (that’s when we went) means geothermal springs, lava fields covered in green moss, plunging waterfalls, immense glaciers and blue icebergs. Deep canyons where a strong belief in fairytale creatures awakens and one can imagine dragons are hiding….

It doesn’t end there, large herds of horses, sheep with their thick wool blowing in the wind and families of geese flying over wide-open landscapes which are awaiting to be explored. And at night the magic does not stop, with colourful lights dancing in the sky.

Iceland is a destination that appeals to adults and children alike.

How long should you plan for a trip to Iceland with the Family?

There is never enough time to fully explore Iceland. But to get a good first time impression of the country I would strongly suggest not going for less than one week.

If you have one week or 10 days like we had in Iceland, focus on exploring the South Coast of Iceland, the Golden Circle and maybe the area near Keflavik International Airport and the capital city of Reykjavik.

If you do have more time, definitely consider adding 2 days up at the Snæfellsnes Peninsula at the beginning of your trip before following our Iceland itinerary for families.

Unfortunately, we did not have the time to include the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, but I heard and researched so much that I know it is definitely a great family area.

You may think that 10 days in Iceland should be enough time to complete the full circle of the entire ring road. Yes, probably. But we love slow travel, to look at things, experience the beautiful landmarks Iceland has to offer and not just tick them off our list and hurry to the next stop.

Also, keep in mind that this is an itinerary in Iceland for families travelling with children, a relaxed and stress-free trip is therefore important.

On another note, Iceland has unpredictable weather. You may have days when you will be very restricted on travelling because of the bad weather and may even get stuck inside your Iceland accommodation for at least one day. Just bear this in mind when planning your trip.

Sometimes less is more!

Before you travel to Iceland

To start your 10-days in Iceland itinerary, the first step is to book your flights and rental car.

As this perfect Iceland road trip will start at Keflavik International Airport, we recommend collecting your car there. This will make it easy to return the car at the end of your holiday in Iceland.

During the months of October onwards, I would definitely suggest booking a 4×4 and making sure winter tires are already mounted. Should you be travelling during the summer months and follow our 10-day Iceland itinerary you would not need to rent a 4×4. But keep in mind, that you cannot drive on F-roads in Iceland in a normal 2-wheel drive car.

I am just mentioning this, in case you do add on some extra activities to “our” plan which may be located on an F-road.

All major sightseeing attractions in Iceland are mostly situated off ring road number one.

We booked our flight to Iceland from Zürich with Icelandic Air and arrived around 15h in Keflavik and our departure flight back home was at 7h. This is just for your information, so you understand our Icelandic itinerary a bit better.

Overview 10-day Iceland Itinerary – Self Drive tour with kids

  • Travel Day – Arriving in Keflavik and Gardur Old Lighthouse visit.
  • Day one – Golden Circle – Kerid Volcanic Crater, Geysir, Gulfoss waterfall, Total Driving distance 205km, new accommodation

  • Day three – South Coast – Kvernufoss Waterfall & Skogar Museum, Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck, Total Driving distance 135km, new accommodation
  • Day four – South Coast – Snow storm in Iceland – Relax at the Black Beach Suites, Dyrhólaey Arch & Lighthouse
  • Day five – South Coast – Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi & Arpáfoss Waterfall, Total Driving distance 125km
  • Day six – Reynisfjara – Black Sand Beach, Vik, Joda cave, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Total Driving distance 183 km, new accommodation
  • Day seven – Hofskirkja Turf Church, Fjallsárlón Glacier, Jökulsárlón Glacier, Diamond Beach, Vestrahorn PENINSULA, Viking Village Film Set, Total Driving distance 132km, new accommodation
  • Day eight – Skútafoss Waterfall, The Red Chair, Hvalnes Lighthouse in Hornafjorour, Vestrahorn, Total Driving distance 92km
  • Day nine – Driving back to Selfoss- Stop again at Jökulsárlón Glacier, Total Driving distance 376km, new accommodation
  • Day ten – Thingvellir National Park, Reykjavik City, Total Driving distance 184km, new accommodation

During these 10 days in Iceland, we covered +1566 km. On day nine we chose not to go north and complete a circle of the ring road due to the road conditions. We checked on the Icelandic road info website and all the roads north were icy and covered in snow.

If we would have had one extra day we would have gone north for sure and stopped there. But this way it felt safer for us and most certainly less stressful.

TRAVEL TIP: This might be a good tip for you as well. To keep one or two days without any accommodation booked. This way you can see where you’re at and make changes according to the weather and your wishes. This is what we did, with our last accommodation in Iceland being booked the day before getting to it. There is always somewhere available to sleep in Iceland.

Enjoy this 10-day Iceland Itinerary and safe travels!

Iceland Itinerary with families in mind

Arrival day.

Our flight arrived at 15h00. After collecting our rental car we drove to the Berg Hotel which is situated close to the airport in Keflavik.

Our first night’s stay here was for a reason. When we planned and organised our trip to Iceland, the volcano was still active on a daily basis, and we wanted to see it during the golden hours on our arrival and maybe even again the next day before leaving on our epic road trip in Iceland. Well, this has not worked out, as two weeks prior to our arrival the volcano went into sleep mode and hasn’t woken up since.

On the other hand, not driving too far after a flight was also quite nice. So, it all worked out perfectly and we could discover the lighthouse, have dinner, and a late rooftop jacuzzi session at the hotel. And we got lucky, the Aurora Borealis welcomed us to Iceland that night!

Travel TIP: The famous Blue Lagoon is also close by, so, why not explore it on your arrival day.

Day One – Golden Circle Tour

Kerid Volcanic Crater, Geysir, Gulfoss waterfall, new accommodation in Fludir, total driving distance 205km

We left Hotel Berg in Keflavik at about 10h00 and drove 107km partly on ring road number one, direction Stellfoss. We changed to road 35 and drove a section of the Golden Circle Tour in Iceland.

You will already get a great feel of the large empty spaces Iceland is well known for. Around Stellfoss, you will see lots of steam in random places and the smell of sulphur (rotten eggs) is noticeable in the air.

Kerid Volcanic Crater

When you approach Kerid Crater you will see the parking lot on your right with a small cabin. It is here where you have to pay the admission fee (ISK 400 which is about 2.50 Euro per person) to access the pathway around Kerid crater. There are no toilet facilities at the site.

Geysir Geothermal Area

Your road trip in Iceland continues on road 35 for 47km all the way to the Geysir Geothermal Area. This is a very touristy place, but I guess rightly so. Seeing all the steam and bubbles emerging from the ground is fascinating to watch.

There is a large free car park, a massive restaurant and a souvenir shop adjacent to the Geysir. There is a designated walking path around the area and if you do have time, walk up to the viewpoint which gives you a great view. Maybe you will even catch the large Strokkur Geysir erupting from up there.

The Mighty Gulfoss Waterfall

A further 10km along the road will bring you to our last sightseeing adventure in Iceland for the day. The landscape around this place is flat and empty, and only in the far distance will you see the mountains and glaciers shimmering in the evening sun. Again, a large free carpark is on-site along with toilet facilities and a restaurant.

There are different viewpoints to walk to, some closer to the water and some further away. Depending on where you will be standing you may even see a large rainbow.

Driving back to our accommodation in Fludir

After this most beautiful first day along our road trip in Iceland we’re heading to our accommodation which is based along the Golden Circle.

You can cut through the middle along road number 30 for 41km, which brings you to the small village of Fludir and further on to the accommodation, the A44 Cottages. A small grocery shop can be found in Fludir should you need to do any shopping.

Travel Tip: If you feel up for a hot spring, visit the Secret Lagoon (now not so secret anymore), located in Fludir it is Icelandic’s oldest hot spring. Oh, and make sure you check the sky at night for the dancing Aurora Borealis. This accommodation is perfect to see the Northern Lights.

Day Two – Extended Golden Circle Tour

Hrunalaug Hot Spring, Gjain Viking area, Haifoss waterfall, Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng – The Common Wealth Farm, total driving distance 134km

It is best to bring a picnic on this day, as we will not pass restaurants or villages.

Hrunalaug Hot Spring

I was looking forward to plunging in the Hrunalaug Hotspring ever since I started planning this family trip to Iceland.

After a short 13km drive along road 30 followed by gravel road 344, you will hopefully see the place to park. It might be that there are already some cars parked there. There is a box on a fence post for the entry fee of 10 USD per person. Well worth the money as it is so special.

We found out that this hot spring is on private land and the money is for it’s upkeep.

Gjain Viking Area

Your next stop is a film location of the Games of Thrones series. And when you are standing there in this beautiful valley you know why they have chosen it. It is beautiful mysterious and off the beaten track.

To get to Gjain you will be driving along the Þjórsárdalur Valley on road 327 which is classed as the Upcountry of Iceland but not yet the Highlands. The road is not the best with some potholes to be found but the end result is well worth the slow drive and the stunning scenery you will find.

Haifoss waterfall

To make the effort and visit Haifoss waterfall will be one of the highlights along this entire 10-day Itinerary in Iceland. Well away, tucked in the Upcountry of Iceland you will be blown away with this most stunning view when standing at the edge and looking at these powerful waterfalls. (There are 3 in total)

The distance from Gjain to Haifoss is only 11km along road 332 (not considered an F-road yet) but takes some time to drive due to the road conditions.

Þjóðveldisbærinn Stöng – The Common Wealth Farm

On our way back to the accommodation we had one more stop and what a way to finish our second day in Iceland. This quirky farm is set on a small hill and apparently another Game of Thrones film location. Drive 19km back the gravel road and along road 32 until Stöng where you will find this gem.

If you visit during the summer the house is a museum and can be visited inside. You can see why the surroundings were ideal for a Game of Thrones scene. The Hjálparfoss waterfall gives a great backdrop to the area.

What a beautiful and impressive day in Iceland. Driving back during the sunset to your accommodation in Fludir will only be 36km.

Day Three Iceland Itinerary – South Coast of Iceland

Kvernufoss Waterfall & Skogar Museum, Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck, (New Accommodation), new accommodation Black Sand Beach Suites, total driving distance 135km

Kvernufoss Waterfall & Skogar Museum

Today you will start to explore the beautiful South Coast of Iceland, where the first stop will be at Kvernufoss Waterfall after 104 driving kilometres. The reason why we came straight here was when we passed Seljalandsfoss there were sooooo many coaches and the car park was full.

So, we traded it with this hidden gem in Iceland. And we would not have done it differently!

You will park your car at the Skogarfoss Museum, there is a fee to be paid inside the building. The hiking trail ( 15min) is right behind the museum starting with negotiating a stile.

When you return and before carrying on with your day, you might want to stroll around the outside part of the museum. It gives you great insight into the traditional Icelandic turf houses.

Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck

Only 11km from Kvernufoss Waterfall along the ring road is the start of the trail to reach the Sólheimasandur plane wreck, way out by the beach.

NOTE: You can book a bus transfer to get to the wreck, which I would highly recommend. The hike of nearly 4 km is not the nicest and if windy most certainly not very pleasant. Trust me on that, we hiked it 🙂 . Another alternative to reach the plane is to go on a Quad Bike Tour

Still, I am glad we visited the plane wreck in Iceland. It is special, unique and will not be there forever. We chose our day as we saw the weather forecast for the next few days was not brilliant and this is definitely not an activity in Iceland you want to do during bad weather.

Driving to our new accommodation

After spending a good 3 hours, including the hike around the wreck area it was time to check in at the Black Sand Beach Suites. The drive is 61km passing the Dyrólaey area and over the mountain, direction Vik.

Definitely recommend this place as it was large, clean and had amazing views, once the fog lifted. 🙂

Day four South Coast – Iceland Itinerary

Snowstorm in Iceland, yep that is not something unheard of! The weather turned for the worse and should you also have bad weather on your Iceland itinerary then relax, read a book, look through your photos and catch up on some sleep.

We planned a visit to the Dyrhólaey viewpoint to check out the Arch & Lighthouse. We still went out in the afternoon for a little drive in the snowstorm, but the kids and Dave stayed in the car whilst I tried to make the best out of the situation and headed to the viewpoint. It was miserable.

Day five road trip along the South Coast

Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi & Arpáfoss Waterfall, Total driving distance 125km

Skogafoss

Luckily the bad weather lasted just 24h and we were back on schedule with our 10-day Iceland itinerary. Day 5 was a waterfall day, starting with Skogafoss which was 31km from the accommodation. Skogafoss could also be added today three as it is next to Kvernufoss Waterfall.

Here there are facilities such as a restaurant and toilets on site.

Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi & Arpáfoss Waterfall

After getting soaked at Skogafoss we went back along the ring road for 30km and visited the three beautiful falls Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi & Arpáfoss. The first two you will be sharing with a lot of other tourists, but not the Arpáfoss. Make the effort and get back in the car and drive 3km up the mountain to this fall. You will not see it from the road, but if you check on Google maps this gives you an idea of its situation and where to stop the car to walk up the small hill until you get to see the cascading waters of Arpáfoss.

There are no restaurants at this site but you will find toilets (not at Arpáfoss). To get back to the accommodation, Black Beach Suites was a 61km drive.

If you wish to have dinner out there is a restaurant at the Black Sand Beach which is a few km past the accommodation, or you can head to Vik which is only 10km away on the other side of the hill.

Day six – heading towards the Icelandic Glaciers

Reynisfjara – Black Sand Beach, Vik, Joda cave, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, New Accommodation in Hof – Adventure Hotel, total driving distance 183 km

You are about to experience a variety of amazing vistas. Best to pack a picnic today as all these stops will be on the way to your new accommodation in Hof.

Reynisfjara – Black Sand Beach

Only a short drive down to the Reynisfjara beach from your accommodation and you are at the famous Black Sand beach.

Best to visit during low tide, as not only is it easier to walk around and visit all the caves with the basalt columns called Reynisdrangar, but it is also safer. You may have heard of sneaker waves? The dangerous waves that literally sneak up the beach, grab your feet and pull you into the ocean. If you don’t believe me Google “Sneaker wave Black Sand Beach” and see for yourself. Stay away from the water, don’t be brave, be smart.

Vik (Vík í Mýrdal) Viewpoint

Before leaving this area and heading towards the glaciers, you should head up to the Church in Vik. It is only 11km away from your last stop and offers a pretty view over this typical Icelandic village.

It may also be good to stock up on food. There is a large shopping area where you also can find the ICEWEAR (Icelandic outdoor wear brand) shop. Tempting…. I know.

Hjörleifshöfòi Cave – the Yoda cave

You do not need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy this place. Drive along the ring road for 15km until a small road with the same name as the cave goes off to the right towards the beach.

Best if you have Google maps open, the cave is marked on it and so you will find the location easily. (You can also save our map to your phone).

We had the caves, the beach and the NON windy site all to ourselves. It was amazing. Well worth the stop and great for some fun photography.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

We will be heading to the eastern region of Iceland, but when we speak of the glacier sites, we still mean South Coast of Iceland.

Your last stop will be 59km driving from your previous stop. Hidden away one can find the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Free parking on-site and normally there is a toilet block although it was out of use when we visited.

There is a 1.5km walkway to the furthest viewpoint from the car park. It stretches along the top of canyon giving great views of this amazing place.

Drive to the Accommodation in Hof –Turf Church in Iceland

There are not many facilities between the landmarks, just the nature on offer to enjoy.

This is why we booked to stay in the Adventure Hotel in Hof. Great place, large room and good food and breakfast. And we even spotted the Aurora Borealis.

The hotel is right next to Hofskirkja, one of only 6 turf churches remaining in Iceland.

Day Seven – Iceland Itinerary –  Glacier Route

Fjallsárlón Glacier, Jökulsárlón Glacier, Diamond Beach, Vestrahorn PENINSULA, Viking Village Film Set, New Accommodation Aurora Cabins – Höfn, total driving distance 132km.

Fjallsárlón Glacier

I guess most of us visit Iceland to see the glaciers and today will be the day. Already approaching the area feels so different than other parts we have visited along the south coast of Iceland. Also, you will feel that there are fewer tourists around.

When you drive the 29km to Fjallsárlón Glacier, you will be passing amazing landscapes and endless glacier views. You can stop at other smaller inlets for photography and marvel at the unbelievable panoramas in every direction.

Jökulsárlón Glacier & Diamond Beach

Only 11km further down the road you will get to the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier and Diamond Beach. Diamond Beach is on the right before you cross the large bridge. There is a second beach and car park on the other side of the bridge, just check on which side there are more icebergs to decide where to stop.

For the lagoon you have to cross the bridge to get to the main parking area and lagoon viewpoint on the left.

When we were there, it was so windy and super cold, that we did not spend too long at either site. We knew that we will pass this place again when we drive back to Rejkiavik so we kept our fingers crossed for milder and more pleasant weather on our return.

Travel Tip: As you approach the Glacier Lagoon there are several places you can stop on the left and walk over the small hills to get different views (if the wind lets you).

You can book a boat trip to get close to the icebergs (add link get your guide)

Vestrahorn Peninsula – Stokksnes & Viking Village Film Set

And here is an absolute highlight of the trip, or at least it was for us. Stokksnes – Vestrahorn Peninsula is peaceful, amazing and a great place to catch the evening golden hour.. We nearly had no wind compared to the glacier lagoon and the whole area is just breathtakingly beautiful. Vestrahorn is an 83km driving distance from the last stop. You will be passing Höfn where you will spend the next 2 nights, but it is only 9km to drive back afterward.

The turn-off to Stokksnes is just before the tunnel, so if you are in the tunnel you have missed it!

You need to pay an admission fee to get to the beach and the Viking village. More info on our South Coast of Iceland Guide.

Travel Tip: You can eat at the Viking café from where you need to purchase the tickets. They have small snacks available. Otherwise, it would be in Höfn where your next accommodation is.

Accommodation at the Aurora Cabins. Get lucky like we did, as for us the name of the cabins was correct. Every night we witnessed the Northern Lights even though it was FULL MOON when we were there. Don’t let this disturb you, you must go outside and check, the Aurora forecast app is not always right.

This was a magical day in Iceland.

Day eight – East in Iceland

Skútafoss Waterfall, The Red Chair, Hvalnes Lighthouse in Hornafjorour, Vestrahorn, total driving distance 92km

Bring a packed lunch.

Today you will be heading to the furthest point from Reykjavik on this 10-day itinerary in Iceland along the ring road. It actually already belongs to East Iceland, but we feel it is well worth the drive to get away from the tourists and see something different.

Skútafoss Waterfall

Your first stop will be another waterfall that looks at first small and timid, but changes when you are standing close by and even more so, when you hold your hands under the ice-cold water cascading down in front of you.

Skútafoss is only 16km drive from your accommodation and the access is easy.

After you have passed through the tunnel it is not much longer until a small road leads to the left and straight to the waterfall. You can park a few hundred metres away and walk the rest.

At the bottom of the fall is a massive cave and you can climb partially behind the fall itself, but be careful as in October it was already icy and slippery.

The Red Chair

Only some metres on your right after Skútafoss is this fun-looking red chair. The B&B accommodation further along uses this landmark for a guidance to their accommodation. You can use it as a fun photography spot in Iceland.

Hvalnes Lighthouse in Hornafjorour

The Hvalnes Lighthouse is orange and looks amazing in its natural surroundings. The shoreline, the mountains afar, and the mossy hills – are all part of this pretty scene.

The view is breathtaking from this spot, but if you are lucky you can also meet here birds, reindeer and huge waves, a black sand beach, and many water holes for the kids to play around and seek sea creatures.

This is also a fantastic photography place in Iceland. In addition, the long black sand beach is great for a walk. We visited Iceland in October and it was pretty windy all over, yet the Hvalnes Lighthouse area had hardly any wind. The calmer weather was appreciated and welcomed by us all.

Vestrahorn Peninsula – Stokksnes

From the Lighthouse it is 46km back to your accommodation in Höfn and you will be passing again the Stokksnes area. It was nearly impossible to drive past it without another stop 🙂

And as it got close to the golden hour and a perfect photography time for the Vestrahorn Mountains’ reflection in the wet black sand we stopped again in Stokksnes.

The untouched South east Coast in Iceland

Day Nine – Driving back to Selfoss

Stop again at Jökulsárlón Glacier, New Accommodation in Selfoss – Hellatún Guest House, total driving distance 376km

NOTE: If the weather conditions would have been better, we would have driven back to Reykjavik along the top ring road and completed the circle, even though it would have been two days of driving. But doable if all the odds are in your favour.

As we travelled to Iceland at the end of October, winter was already present and the roads further north were icy. Maybe if you are travelling during the summer months, driving a full circle of the ring road is an option.

But if you are following our 10-days Itinerary along the South Coast of Iceland then it is now time to make your way back, direction Reykjavik.

Today you will cover 376km driving along the ring road. This still gives you plenty of time to stop at areas you may not have seen before due to bad weather or simply because you wish to visit them again.

We stopped again at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon which was after 76km of driving after leaving Höfn and the Aurora Cabins.

New Accommodation in Selfoss/Hella – Hellatún Guest House,

After that, it was a 300km straight drive to Selfoss-Hella. We have chosen to stop here as it was pretty much after 5h driving which is enough for us.

Pouring rain all the way made us not want to stop anywhere else.

The Icebergs at the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Day Ten – Golden Circle Tour & Reykjavik

Thingvellir National Park, Reykjavik City, New Accommodation Keflavik– Aurora Hotel Keflavik Airport, total driving distance 184km

Thingvellir National Park

After a relaxed morning, you will be driving 84km to the historic site and national park of Thingvellir (Þingvellir). Iceland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site on the mainland.

The National Park is part of the Golden Circle, and it is here where you will find the famous tectonic plates and the famous Silfra Ravine for snorkeling or diving activities.

Reykjavik City

Only a short drive of 49km and you will arrive in Reykjavik City. We only visited for two hours which was great and enough to keep everybody happy.

Checkout the map of Iceland, I have put a marker in the Reykjavik area where to park, or head to our Golden Circle Itinerary Guide for more details.

Dropping off your car & new accommodation in Keflavik– Aurora Hotel

The last 51km was to Keflavik Airport where we conveniently dropped off our car right next to the airport hotel.

So our 10-day itinerary in Iceland during the month of October is coming to an end. We had an amazing time, saw so much and would not have changed it. Marvelled at so many waterfalls & glaciers, swam in the cutest hot spring in Iceland, visited endless long black sand beaches and witnessed the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) six times. What more do you need!
