Italy has always been one of those destinations that feels made for slow travel — long lunches, lively piazzas, and little villages where life still moves at its own pace.
But when travelling with kids, it can sometimes feel easier to stick to the big attractions and well-known cities. In reality though, some of the most memorable family moments in Italy happen when you slow down a little and experience the country the way locals do.
From family-run trattorias in Tuscany to quiet villages across the country, Italy offers endless opportunities to experience local life as a family.
In this collaborative article, we’re sharing a few simple ways to experience the real Italy as a family, beyond the typical tourist trail.

3 Ways to Have an Authentic Family Holiday in Italy
Italy is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe thanks to its rich history and culture, delectable food, and beautiful landscape. For those looking for authentic travel experiences, Italy has plenty – but exploring them with kids can be tricky at times. Many of us may resort to visiting the tourist hotspots over quieter hidden gems, simply due to the fact that they tend to be more accessible for families.
However, you shouldn’t have to pass up any experiences in Italy because you’re traveling as a family. Here, we share three ways to have an authentic vacation experience together.
1. Dine like a local
Italy is considered one of the best places in the world to eat delicious food, but beware the tourist traps if you want an authentic experience. The best food is served in restaurants that are popular with locals and these tend to be off the beaten path, well away from popular attractions and crowded piazzas. Prices tend to be more affordable in these types of restaurants, too, making them a family-friendly option.
Luckily, local restaurants tend to have a very welcoming, warm atmosphere that’s pleasant for adults and kids alike. Family-run restaurants tend to feel quite relaxed, which can be helpful if you’re concerned about your kids making noise or if you have fussy eaters. Unlike tourist hotspots, these small eateries tend to run at a slower, more laid-back pace – so there’s room to chat with the staff about potential accommodations if needed.
2. Choose comfortable transport
Italy has a fantastic public transport system and a great way to see the country’s authentic side if you’re traveling solo is to utilize this network. However, depending on the age of your kids, getting around this way can feel stressful at times. Hiring a car is an excellent option that’ll allow you to explore the places you want to, when you want to, without worrying about getting the kids ready in time to catch a bus or train, or them becoming overstimulated on the journey. One of our favourite places to explore by car is Elba Island, where quiet beaches and scenic coastal drives make it perfect for families. If you’re planning a visit, here are our favourite beaches in Elba and some wonderful hikes on Elba that are perfect for kids.
3. Rent a property in a lesser-known town
There are tens of thousands of hotels in Italy to choose from, but for a glimpse of local life, consider a private short-term rental instead of a hotel. Look for an apartment or house in a small town or village adjacent to the main city or sights that you plan to explore, to feel immersed in the goings on of local life without the crowds or tourist adverts. Don’t write off off-the-beaten-path locations, as these can often have a more family-friendly feel.
Your kids will get to experience what life is like for local neighbourhood kids at home, and you’ll have more freedom to tailor your daily schedule to make it work for your family. For example, you’ll be able to cook your own meals and shop at traditional markets for produce, for authentic Italian dinners that’ll also keep your kids in a familiar routine.
Experience the Real Italy as a Family
Travelling through Italy with kids doesn’t mean you have to stick to the big Italian cities or famous landmarks. With a little planning, it’s easy to discover a more authentic side of the country — one filled with local food, charming villages and unforgettable landscapes.
