However, you shouldn’t have to pass up any experiences in Italy because you’re traveling as a family. Here, we share three ways to have an authentic vacation experience together.
1. Dine like a local
Italy is considered one of the best places in the world to eat delicious food, but beware the tourist traps if you want an authentic experience. The best food is served in restaurants that are popular with locals and these tend to be off the beaten path, well away from popular attractions and crowded piazzas. Prices tend to be more affordable in these types of restaurants, too, making them a family-friendly option.
Luckily, local restaurants tend to have a very welcoming, warm atmosphere that’s pleasant for adults and kids alike. Family-run restaurants tend to feel quite relaxed, which can be helpful if you’re concerned about your kids making noise or if you have fussy eaters. Unlike tourist hotspots, these small eateries tend to run at a slower, more laid-back pace – so there’s room to chat with the staff about potential accommodations if needed.
2. Choose comfortable transport
Italy has a fantastic public transport system and a great way to see the country’s authentic side if you’re traveling solo is to utilize this network. However, depending on the age of your kids, getting around this way can feel stressful at times. Hiring a car is an excellent option that’ll allow you to explore the places you want to, when you want to, without worrying about getting the kids ready in time to catch a bus or train, or them becoming overstimulated on the journey. There are tens of thousands of hotels in Italy to choose from, but for a glimpse of local life, consider a private short-term rental instead of a hotel. Look for an apartment or house in a small town or village adjacent to the main city or sights that you plan to explore, to feel immersed in the goings on of local life without the crowds or tourist adverts. Don’t write off off-the-beaten-path locations, as these can often have a more family-friendly feel.
Your kids will get to experience what life is like for local neighbourhood kids at home, and you’ll have more freedom to tailor your daily schedule to make it work for your family. For example, you’ll be able to cook your own meals and shop at traditional markets for produce, for authentic Italian dinners that’ll also keep your kids in a familiar routine.
