The Allmendhubel playground “Flower Park”in Mürren is one of the most scenic and coolest alpine kids playground in Switzerland. This is the opinion of our kids.

I know this is a pretty strong view, but I have to admit, it is an amazing playground. And to top it all the unspoilt nature and uninterrupted views of some of the Alps’ most beautiful and famous peaks, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau awaits.

Where is the Allmendhubel ” Flower Park” Playground & Flower Trail?

Not only is the Allmendhubel Playground & Flower Trail one of the best playgrounds for kids it is also in an epic location with views to marvel at. You need to get to Mürren which is a car free charming mountain village in the Jungfrau Region accessible from the Lauterbrunnen valley, at Stechelberg.

The whole area is very popular and well-known to international tourists, therefore it can get super busy up there. It is also on the way to the Bond World 007 exhibit at Piz Gloria Schilthorn station. And not to forget the Thrill Walk at Birg. In other words, be early and spend the whole day especially if you are just visiting on a day trip (from Interlaken for example).

A very popular destination in the Jungfrau region and quite rightly so.

How to get to the Allmendhubel Playground & Trail?

You need to make your way to Stechelberg and take the cable car to the charming car free village of Mürren.

Insider Travel tip
If you can, my biggest insider tip is to stay the night at Mürren. This way you can be up there in the late afternoon, when most day visitors have already left. And then beat the crowds in the morning with the 1st ascent of the Allmendhubel Funicular. Like this the kids will most probably have the Allmendhubel Playground to themselves for a while. Check out some Hotels in Mürren.

Either way, whether you stay overnight or not, Mürren is your destination to head for.

You have two options to get up to Mürren.

OPTION ONE – Arriving by car to Mürren

If you are travelling by car, drive all the way to Stechelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. There you will find a large payable car park and the Schilthorn Piz Gloria Cable Car which will bring you up to Mürren.

Take a ticket when you drive in to the Schilthorn Cableway Carpark at Stechelberg.  You have to pay when you depart, so make sure you do not lose your ticket. From 4-8 hours it cost Chf 7.- and if you are staying overnight at Mürren then you are looking to pay probably a 24 to 36 hours ticket which will be Chf 15.- . You can check all the tariffs directly with the Schilthorn Piz Gloria Cable Car company.

OPTION TWO – Arriving via Grütschalp to Mürren

If for any reason you cannot get to Stechelberg you can also reach Mürren by train via the Grütschalp. Like with the previous option follow the signs to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.

Should the Lauterbrunnen Valley be closed for any reasons – like when we visited due to an accident – you can park your car in Zweilütschinen (limited parking) and take the train to Lauterbrunnen.

Otherwise you can park at the multi-storey car park at the Lautebrunnen railway station.

From there enjoy the ride up to Grütschalp by cable car und then change to the Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain railway (BLM) which brings you to Mürren. I would suggest to head directly to Stechelberg as it is the easier option to reach Mürren and its Allmendhubel Playground. However this route gives a different option should you need it.

Arriving to Mürren on Public Transport

Take a train to Interlaken then change to the train to Lauterbrunnen. From here you could go straight to the Grütschalp cable car and then the train to Mürren, or you could hop on the post bus to Stechelberg and ride the Schilthorn cable car to Mürren.

Arriving at Mürren

Once in Mürren, either by train or by cable car, check out the view and the charming village before following the signs to the Allmendhubel funicular. It is a short 5 min walk from both sides of the village and this allows you to get a feel of how relaxed Mürren is.

This should help you to understand the while area. The yellow line is the pushchair road back down to Mürren. Whereas the red trail indicates the hiking trail via the children’s adventure park and the picnic place with fire pit.

Which ticket to choose for the Allmendhubel “Flower Park” Playground

It all depends on what you are planning on doing and how long you will stay in Mürren to determine which ticket to choose. If you are just there for the day get a return ticket Stechelberg – Allmendhubel

If your plan is also to visit Schilthorn Piz Gloria then best get the return ticket for Schilthorn  And add the Mürren – Allmendhubel Funicular as an extra to the ticket (one way if you are hiking down).

If you overnight in Mürren take a one-way ticket to Mürren. They do not have, like other stations, tickets which are valid for 24 h.

A good idea is to book online your way up to Mürren so you can bypass the queues.

The Allmendhubel tickets can also be paid for at the funicular station and cost Chf 7.- for an adult.

Good to know: Riding up to Allmendhubel is included in the Regional Bernese Oberland Pass ticket. Children with SBB Junior card and under 6 yrs old ride free. Otherwise they have the reduced fee. Other abonnements like the SBB Half-fare, GA, SBB Day Passes and Swiss Travel Pass  also qualify for a discounted price.

At the Allmendhubel “Flower Park” Playground

The Allmendhubel funicular from Mürren will transport you up the mountain to 1907m in 4 minutes. Leave your cares behind you, admire one of the most amazing Swiss skylines and let the kids run wild amongst giant flowers, and oversized insects.

Flower Park at Allmendhubel Playground

The FLOWER PARK adventure playground on the Allmendhubel takes you into a fantastic world. Once our kids saw the playground they were off and we did not see them again- where have they gone? Ah… found them, exploring the underground tunnels- the marmot burrows! How cool is this, and I can imagine what is going on in their adventure brains. They were in heaven whilst running around the giant alpine flowers, grasses and oversized insects. There is even a section where they can learn about milking a cow and how to make cheese.

All this activity at the Allmendhubel playground has given us parents some quiet time to check out the amazing views, finding out which one of the peaks was the Eiger, which the Mönch and which one the mighty Jungfrau.

As we were early the playground was pretty much ours at first. But as time passed more and more day tourists joined us at the Flower Park adventure playground on the Allmendhubel.

The restaurant at Allmendhubel is right next to the playground nicely situated so that you could have a coffee whilst still having an eye on your children making friends and exploring the Allmendhubel Flower Park.

The Flower Discovery Trail at Allmendhubel

As more and more families came up the mountain and the Allmendhubel Flower Park filled with exciting kids, we made our way to the flower discovery trail. The path starts next to the Allmendhubel restaurant and finishes again at the other side by the playground. It features over 150 different species of alpine flowers. The trail was newly designed by Pro-nature in 2016 and is best hiked in June/July to see most of the flowers in full bloom.

The loop is only about 20min hiking time but there is a lot of interaction points on the trail plus a ton of information. Therefore, plan a bit more time for it. We absolutely loved it, and the only regret I have is not having been here in June or July. By August many the plants had finished flowering. But it was still a beautiful and interesting path.

Hike from the Allmendhubel to Mürren

This optional hike gives you more of the amazing views, plenty of alpine flowers and even more playgrounds and adventures. It is a great choice of hike because the beauty of the big famous peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch will follow you along. On the way you will pass a great adventure park area with a forest slide, a zip line and other climbing obstacles. There is even another small playground and a BBQ station just before arriving back down in Mürren.

Hiking Facts:

  • Length: 2km one way
  • Acscent / Descent : 10metres / 265metres
  • Not pushchair friendly. However you can walk down to Mürren along the mountain road with the pushchairs. Skip the adventure trail part.

On the trail to Mürren

After the Allmendhubel Flower trail carry on walking in to the valley along the mountain road and then follow the path to Restaurant Sonnenberg. Only a few more minutes after the restaurant there is a sign pointing to the right indicating the path to the “Children’s adventure trail.”

Follow it down whilst passing some fun sections for the kids to play even more. If you are planning to have a picnic there will be a place close to Mürren with a fire pit, table and a small playground.

Where to stay in Mürren

Spend the night at this beautiful mountain village and see the sun going down behind the beautiful Jungfrau region mountains. Chalets, hotel or apartments are all on offer within the village plus a sports centre with swimming pool, which we really appreciated as a family.

We stayed in the simple Sport-Chalet, it was more than enough as we were out and about most of our stay enjoying these amazing mountain views.

Other accommodations that looked great are,

  • Hotel Alpina, A family run Hotel right in the heart of Mürren. Its location offers unique and spectacular views over the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains
  • Eiger Guesthouse,  Great if you arrive to Mürren by train is this cosy and relaxed guesthouse. Located opposite the train station in Mürren.
  • Chalet Anemone, If you would rather have an apartment then this would be a great choice. Offering panoramic views of the Bernese Alps right in the centre of Mürren.
  • Eiger Mürren Swiss Quality Hotel, If you are looking for more luxury accommodation in Mürren with swimming pool then this one might be the right choice for you.

Our thoughts on The “Flower Park” Allmendhubel Playground & Flower Trail

What is there not to like? The Allmendhubel Flower Playground & Flower Trail is an amazing fun park for the kids and for us adults a relaxing place with vistas you cannot get enough of.

We loved the short hike around the flower trail which had so many great interactive stations and in addition, the Allmendhubel Flower Trail offers an easy walk with some great education about the Alpine Flower world.

If possible, I recommend to hike down to Mürren if the time allows.

I feel if you want to pack all in one day including the Schilthorn Piz Gloria, the James Bond 007 film story and the Birg thrill walk you would have to rush quite a bit. And because of this it is not recommended to do it all in one day. Better to stay for two days.

  3. We are planning to visit the first week in April. I am having a hard time figuring out what may be open and what only opens for the summer. Do you know if this playground is open? Most of my research into places take about winter season and summer season but not early spring. Help!

    • Hi Liz
Thanks for getting in touch. Yes the Allmendhubel is part of the Mürren ski slops so the funiculair is definitely open. It is also the access to the Allmendhubel Restaurant. Depending on the snow conditions you may not be able to use the full playarea though.
      hope this has helped
      Have fun wehen you visit

  4. If you hike down from the Allmenhubel playground via the Children’s Trail to Murren, approximately how long will that part take? I know it depends on stops at activities, but in general?

    • Hi Annie
Indeed it all depends on the time you stop. You will be passing another zipline area in the forest which could add 30 minutes to your hike☺️.
Count a good hour more 1 1/2 to be sure. When will you visit? regards Corina
