Every time we come back to Trevone Beach it feels like we’re miles away from it all on a little deserted island.

After having tried out several other beaches and areas in North Cornwall, we still feel that the Trevone Beach with kids is simply the best beach in Cornwall.

Trevone Beach with Kids

We fell in love with it and this is why.

Just over 2 miles from Padstow is Trevone, a small seaside village that unlike many other villages has a thriving local community who love to make tourists feel a part of it.

Trevone beach is located to the south of Trevose Head and to the north of Harlyn Bay.  One can actually find two beaches; a sandy one which is surrounded by high cliffs on one side and on the other side a big rocky ledge known as the Trevone Rock Beach by the locals.

At low tide, natural swimming pools appear, which understandably become very popular during the summer months. We always visit during low season which we prefer.
The area has been awarded the Blue Flag Award 2018, one of only eight beaches that have received the award in Cornwall.

Since written this article, Trevone Beach has once more received the Award in 2022 as well. There are now in total 9 Blue Flag beaches listed in Cornwall in 2022.

The beach is not the only outstanding natural beauty in the area. Stunning cliff path walks from Trevone lead towards Padstow. Or in the other direction towards Trevose Head and beyond. Famous also for the ‘Blow Hole’ on the cliffs above the beach. A natural phenomenon lying 25 meters deep formed by a collapsed sea cave, which draws tourists from far and beyond. In other words, Trevone beach in Cornwall is just simply beautiful.

What offers Trevone beach in Cornwall

Trevone Beach totally fulfils our family holiday MOTTO “the easier the better”. Easy access to and from the beach plus safe areas. Having the possibility to be sheltered from the English coastal winds is an absolute plus. And probably the most important point, plenty of great rock pools, and most of all, no dogs allowed during peak season.

We do love dogs, but not owning a dog and not being used to them sometimes causes us unnecessary anxiety. Particularly when dogs and our twin toddlers are both running freely on the same beach.

Unfortunately, not every dog owner is responsible and picks up after their dog. It just worries me and I certainly do not want to offend any dog owners with this statement. There are a number of dog friendly beaches in Cornwall.

Adjacent to the beach is a large car park (fees payable), toilets, licensed cafe and a well-stocked surf shop, which best of all, even has wetsuits for toddlers!  Further up the road is an art gallery, farm store and a pub.

Trevone village offers a small number of B&B’s and guesthouses, as well as a number of great holiday homes for rent.

The last few times we have rented a house right next to the beach access path. It was simply gorgeous. Every window gave a view over the sandy Trevone Beach, which allowed a check on the state of the tide.

Plus at the same time, a giggle at some of the acrobatics performed by the beginner surfers or to simply marvel at a performance from a pro.

Even when not at the beach you were still part of it.

The close proximity to the beach also gave the freedom to quickly return to the house whenever needed. Plus, all the sand you would normally carry from the beach into the car, stayed outside by the external shower at the house.

Surfing at Trevone Beach in Cornwall

Very popular with surfers, as this small cove produces good waves from low to mid tide.

Suitable for: intermediate and experienced surfers. As we’re not yet a surfing family please do contact the local site for more detailed information.

Lifeguards normally cover the beach from May until October.

Our favourite things to do at Trevone Beach with kids!

Trevone Beach, The Bench, View over the Bay over to the Blow Hole, Cornwall
The Bench, View over the Bay over to the Blow Hole, Cornwall
  • Observing the start of the day with a morning coffee in one hand and a breakfast scone in the other, whilst sitting on the bench. I could sit here forever and would never get bored.

  • During early morning low tide strolling on Trevone beach with the kids all the way to the water’s edge is such a great feeling. Enjoying the breaking of the waves and having the “foamy horses” of the Atlantic Ocean grabbing at our feet. The kids and us adults, absolutely loved this.
  • Building rivers, bridges, dams and making new water pathways during low tide in the area at the top of the beach where the fresh water stream runs onto the beach.

  • Searching for shells, crabs and other sea creatures in the many rockpools. This activity will fill your day Trevone beach with kids no doubt about it. There is nothing more relaxing than walking with your wellies, or barefoot, along these great rockpools and pathways the sea has formed and seeking sea creatures. Careful, you must know the tide schedule and have an eye on the rising water as it comes in fast and furious.

  • Building a fairy sandcastle with seashells, seaweed and other great things we have found in the rockpools.

  • At low tide using some of the sandy hollows as our private warm water swimming pool. This is great. We discovered an area towards the back of the sandy beach the last time we visited. At low tide it keeps a good 40cm of water and forms a great plungepool for both kids and adults. Best of all the water is warming up quite quickly on sunny days.

  • Taking our pre-evening walk over to the “blow hole” area and admiring how beautiful Trevone is in the warm colours of the sinking sun.

  • And if we do not go for an evening walk and the tide has not yet come back in, we enjoy and relax with our evening drink and nibbles at the sheltered side of the rock pool beach. Just by the cute little house, literally right at the cliffs is an area where the sea has formed a seating lounge area. The perfect place to have a sundowner whilst the kids can still play in the rockpools. Happiness and contentment written all over our faces.

Whilst spending the whole day at the beach, here are some fun conversation starters which will keep the whole family entertained.

Things to do a bit further afield

The picturesque fishing village of Padstow in Cornwall

famous for its fish, seafood, Cornish pasty and beautiful setting, is an absolute must visit. It is not one of your typical seaside fishing villages, Padstow has much more to offer. You will find a great mixture of houses, quays, boat slips, inns, cafés and restaurants, gift and craft shops, holiday cottages and food shops, banks and more. None of this was planned; it just evolved as the years moved on.

If you would like to discover a bit more than just the harbour and the town itself we suggest you do the following.

  • Walk or cycle the Camel Trail toward Wadebridge
  • Stroll along the estuary footpath toward one of several sandy beaches.
  • Take the ferry across the river to Rock.

There’s something for everyone and for all tastes in Padstow and the surrounding area.

Be impressed by the Trevose Head in Cornwall

A headland with a lighthouse, situated at the Atlantic coast of north Cornwall. Despite having had some really nice sunny days whilst in England, the weather was as you would expect it to be at the beginning of June when we visited Trevose Head. Rainy, windy and grey.

Nevertheless, it made the whole area feel raw, rough and showed nature at its wildest. Like always, the English weather can hit us with everything and anything, and we’re always fully equipped for any condition. The kids looked like they were going on an Eskimo trail, but at least they were warm and dry. The spring flowers dominated the cliffs and gave the area a new colourful coat. In spite of the rain and windy weather, we could fully appreciate its beauty.

In clear weather, one can see virtually the whole length of the north Cornwall coast and more. The view extends beyond the Cornwall county boundary (40 miles), and to the south, it extends beyond St Ives to the headland at Pendeen Watch (35 miles).

Definitely a place we will visit again next year and hopefully the sun will shine.

Take the kids to the Old MacDonalds farm in Cornwall

A small family run park nestling amongst the rolling hills of the Cornish countryside, situated between Padstow and Newquay. This place has so much to offer and easily passes the day.

Attractions for the whole family include a miniature railway, pony rides, pedal go-karts, play tractors, miniature golf, trampolines, and petting and feeding farm animals. Plus, other interactions are offered throughout the day.

It is cheap and cheerful as the English would say but well worth the visit

Visit Prideaux Place in Cornwall

A living history; since its completion in 1592 the same family have lived in this charming Elizabethan manor. Take a guided tour of the house or stroll through the beautiful formal and natural grounds overlooking the deer park.

The herd of fallow deer at Prideaux Place is thought to be one of the oldest park herds in the country.

An informative and interactive feeding of the deer takes place daily. Be sure to call and ask for the feeding time if you and your family would like to join. We all enjoyed it.

If the name Rosamunde Pilcher rings a bell, and you love her romance books and films, then this is definitely a place worth a visit. Fourteen of her books have been filmed at Prideaux Place.

In 1987, at the age of 63, she wrote the international best seller ‘The Shell Seekers’ which sold 5.5 million copies making her one of the most successful contemporary authors in the UK.

Thanks to the filming of her stories at Prideaux Place for transmission in German speaking countries has made this house a Mecca for visitors from Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

The Terrace tearoom prides itself on serving the finest Cornish produce and offers light lunches and their internationally renowned Cornish Cream Tea; freshly baked scones, strawberry jam with lashings of Cornish Clotted Cream and a pot of tea. I recommend to stay for a Traditional Cornish Cream Tea.

  4. Trevone Beach does indeed look lovely! I love the idea of checking out the tide and the surfers before you’ve even left the house, what an amazing place to stay! We visited south west Cornwall this summer but I’m sorely tempted to give the north a try now. #Fearlessfamtrav

  5. What a stunning beach! And can totally see why you claim it as the best beach in North Cornwall. We really haven’t explored much of this area – probably because we used to live by the beach in Kent and could never really justify the long drive to the other side of the country. But the more I read about Cornwall from bloggers, the more I realise that we really should make the effort to get down there.

    • Dear Jenny. Thank you for commenting. We have made this place our annual family visit place. Some are driving from Bath, Cambridge and we from CH. I already look forward to our next trip. The dander is now, that we will not visit more of the Cornwall / Devon coast. Maybe when the kids are older, as I would love to do the whole coast to coast walk. Enjoying reading your stories!

  6. I have been going to nearby Polzeath for years and don’t think I’ve ever made it Trevone beach, Old Macdonald’s Farm, or that beautiful mansion house! I will have to save this for our next Cornish visit! #fearlessfamtrav

    • Hi, thank you for your reply. We already booked for next year 🙂 We have visited many of the nearby beaches when we were there last time to check for our next September trip, and although we found amazing houses which would be absolutely great for our family trip, but the beach where they were situated did just not made us jump. And so we will go back for the 3rd time….
