The Frutt Mountain Resort at Melchsee-Frutt has been on our agenda for quite some time now, and we were overjoyed when we finally booked a stay together with Obwalden Tourism.
The resort has just been voted “The best 4 Star Mountain Wellness Hotel in Switzerland”.
We went to check it out to see whether it is also ideal for families with kids. And in a few words; Yes, it is!

What is the Frutt Mountain Resort?
A luxury 4* Mountain Wellness Hotel in the Swiss Alps managed by the Kempinsky group.
Therefore, if you have already stayed at one of the Kempinsky hotels in St. Moritz, Engelberg or elsewhere, you will know what awaits at the Frutt Mountain Resort.
By also being part of the Kinder-Hotel organisation, you are guaranteed to experience a great family getaway at Melchsee-Frutt in the heart of Switzerland.
When is the best time to visit the hotel
There are two seasons to enjoy the hospitality of the Frutt Lodge.
Summer and Winter.
The hotel’s opening times are scheduled according to these seasons and in conjunction of the Melchsee-Frutt Cable Car company.
Therefore, make sure to check the opening hours before planning your visit and stay at Melchsee-Frutt.
The winter period usually runs from December to April. On the other hand, the summer – autumn season runs from June to the end of October.
Pick your season, whether it is for some great summer hiking or making some tracks in the snow. Any time at Melchsee-Frutt is a great time.
And to add one more award, not only is the hotel a winner but also the ski domain Melchsee-Frutt. Last year it achieved first place in the category “Klein aber Fein” (Small but beautiful), 2021/22 !
How to access Melchsee-Frutt
In general, whether you visit the area during a summer or winter stay, it is always advised to take the Melchsee-Frutt gondola at Stöckalp. You can park your car at the large car park next to the base station.
If you arrive by cable car, just let the hotel team know when you arrive at the top mountain station and they will transport your luggage to the hotel for you.
During a summer stay at the resort, you can drive up to the Melchsee-Frutt area from Stöckalp. However, it is a one-way road, meaning there are given times where you can drive up or down the mountain.
On even hours the road is open to drive up and on uneven hours you can drive down. Check again with the resort to ensure you don’t have to wait too long for the access.
Take a ticket at the bottom, as you will need to pay for the road Chf 16.- before leaving.
On arrival at the resort, you will find a large car park. It is here where you need to park your car after you have unloaded your luggage at the hotel reception.
Note, that it is NOT ALLOWED to drive up to Melchsee-Frutt during the winter months.
Which room to choose at the Frutt Mountain Resort
There are two sections; one is the Frutt Mountain Lodge, where mainly couples and groups of friends are hosted. The other part is the Lago Lodge wing, designed with families in mind.
The choice is yours and depending on your budget, you can pick anything from the standard double room, to the superior room with lake views or even the family suite.
All rooms are spacious, feature quality furniture and are elegantly decorated in a slick alpine style.
Room Tip: Definitely request a room with lake view. It is super nice to just sit and marvel at this beautiful nature right in front of you.
Saver’s tip: In 2022 there was a special offer for a summer visit. All children up to the age of 15 stay free of charge within the parents’ room. Before you book your room at Frutt Mountain Resort, you may want to ask the hotel directly whether such a special offer exists.
Half board or breakfast only
The Frutt Mountain Resort has 3 different restaurants and 2 bars and lounge areas. Guests can use all facilities, whereas the Frutt Lago Restaurant and the Frutt Lago bar are situated in the family wing of the Lago Lodge.
Our booking was on half board. A delicious 3 course meal was served for the adults and the kids serve themselves at the kids buffet.
A personal remark is that there were many fried things on the kid’s buffet. Rather than just having the possibility of grilled fresh fish for example, the fish or calamari came deep fried in a batter. Delicious, of course but if you are not that used to fried food maybe being on an à la carte deal would be a better choice.
Best is to check with the hotel staff of all the different combinations on offer.
Facilities at the Frutt Mountain Resort
Being part of the Kinder Hotel (Kids Hotel), the amenities for children are great. And should you have a rainy day there are plenty of things to do at the Frutt Lago Lodge.
- Kids play area and kids club.
- Games room with bowling alleys, darts and table football. If you really need to have some PSP gaming during your break, the kids could even have a game or two on that.
- The small cinema offered three movies with popcorn. A real treat for the kids.
We loved the bowling as it is something we don’t really do and to share this experience as a family was great. It was lovely to see the progression as the time went on.
Wellness, Spa & Gym at the Frutt Mountain Resort
There was a reason why the resort has just won (2022) 1st place under the category Best 4* Mountain Wellness Hotel in Switzerland.
This is finally a spa area where kids are welcome! Thank you for this!
In the Lago Lodge you will find a warm water indoor pool with waterfall and jets. There is also another warmer smaller panoramic pool to relax in, with lake view.
The Spa area comes with a Finnish sauna 85 °C, sanarium 60 °C and steam bath 40 °C.
It depends obviously on your children’s age whether you let them experience these spa treatments.
We do like to spend a few minutes in the steam bath. This gives them the experience of how hot a jungle can get!
Up at the adults only spa centre you have even more possibilities and massages are available as well.
Activities around Frutt Mountain Resort at Melchsee-Frutt
This beautiful alpine area offers tranquil walks around Melchsee and a children’s theme trail – the Fruttli Weg. In addition there is a great play ground to spend time outdoors.
Hiking enthusiasts will find many trails leading high up the mountain and away from it all if needed.
If hiking is not your thing for this break, hop on the Frutt Train to enjoy the area between the two lakes of Melchsee and Tannensee.
During a winter stay at Frutt, whether it is cross country skiing, sledding, skiing or snowboarding, you will have a great time.

Conclusion on our stay at Frutt Mountain Resort
First of all, it was amazing. Everything was nice and to a very high standard. Why is there a rating star missing, who knows? Fact is we really enjoyed our stay.
And that all activities are so close by and no car is needed makes this place even more perfect.
Secondly, we liked that the resort went through the effort and divided it in to an adult’s zone and a family paradise.
At no point did we feel we had to ask the kids to be quiet. Not that they were loud, but it was in general a relaxed atmosphere.
There were plenty of other families around and friendships were quickly formed.
And as mentioned before, the fact that we could use the spa as a family was TOP!!!
Would we go again? Without hesitation, yes!
