We ventured and discovered a hidden gem, easily earning its title – Fulidhoo, one of the Best Local Maldivian Islands.

Where is Fulidhoo and how to get there

Fulidhoo, a local Maldivian Island, is the northernmost inhabited island in the Vaavu Atoll.

Just a 1-hour and 10-minutes speedboat ride or a 3.5-hour local ferry journey from Male International Airport. Reaching Fulidhoo is both convenient and cost-effective.

Forget about splurging on an expensive seaplane—Fulidhoo provides a budget-friendly alternative. When you book your accommodation on Fulidhoo, they’ll assist you in securing your transportation, be it a speedboat or ferry (dhoni).

Arriving by Speedboat

For the quickest and most convenient travel, opt for the speedboat from Male International Airport to Fulidhoo. The journey takes only 1 hour and 10 minutes, and at just US $40 per person for a one-way ticket, it won’t break the bank.
Speedboats operate twice daily, except on Fridays, when there is a single morning transfer. Ensure your seat by pre-booking with your accommodation provider.
We booked with Thundi Guesthouse and the manager did it all for us.

In 2023, two companies, Dream Speed and Goma handle transfers, with the meeting point at the airport information desk. If you’re in Male city, head to the Maldives Monetary Authority, next to the fish market.

Arriving with the Ferry

For a more leisurely option, catch the government-run ferry departing from Hulhumale Ferry terminal in Male every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 10 am.
Despite the longer 3.5-hour journey, the ferry only costs US $4 per person. Return trips from Fulidhoo to Male occur at 10:45 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with a stop at Maafushi in South Male Atoll—an additional local island worth exploring.

– Male to Fulidhoo: Twice a day (except Friday) at 11:00 and 15:00 / US $40 one way. Children below 10, $20.
– Fulidhoo to Male: Twice a day (except Friday) at 07:30 and 14:10 / US $40 one way. Children below 10, $20.
– Friday, one morning boat in each direction.

Ferry
– Male to Fulidhoo: Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 11:30 AM / US $4 one way.
– Fulidhoo to Male: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:30 and 16:00 / US $4 one way.

When it comes to accommodation on Fulidhoo, there are options abound unlike resort islands. Our top recommendation is the charming Thundi Guest House. The staff are exceptionally friendly, assisting us with transfers and promptly responding to messages.

Indulge in delectable meals at Thundis GH, and enjoy rooms with proximity to the beach and captivating sea views.
We booked 2 beach rooms next to each other. I would definitely recommend these over the upstairs rooms. You also have a view to the sea from the beach rooms.

Cost of 4 Days on Fulidhoo – Vavvu Atoll

Holidaying on a Maldivian local island is undoubtedly much more budget-friendly than staying at an exquisite luxury Maldivian resort. The two cannot be compared; the infrastructure, quality of housing, and amenities differ.

While one can cost USD 75 per night, a stay at a resort can easily set you back from USD 400 to over USD 2000 per night.

Having now experienced both, we can definitely highly recommend to stay on a local island and experience the Maldives on a budget.

Here is our rough breakdown of 4 nights on Fulidhoo for 4 persons (2 adults and 2 children aged 8).

What to Do on Fulidhoo Island

Despite its small size (700m x 200m) and a population of 300 residents, Fulidhoo offers a range of activities.

Snorkeling & Diving at Fulidhoo

One reason why everyone visits the Maldives is to go snorkeling or diving and discover another world.

After all, the real luxury of the Maldives is nature and the sea!

And one very important point when choosing your perfect Maldivian island should be that the house reef can be easily accessed from the beach.
On some islands you have to join a boat which brings you to the house reef for snorkeling and this can be quite time restricting.

Fulidhoo’s house reef is easily accessible from the east side of the island and is a marine wonderland.
Marvel at vibrant corals, encounter sea turtles, stingrays, and perhaps even a lucky glimpse of a shark.

Stingrays & Nurse Sharks at Fulidhoo

Fulidhoo’s shallow waters by the pier host a mesmerizing spectacle—graceful stingrays and nurse sharks.
The pier becomes a gathering spot not only for curious locals but also for visitors from nearby Maldivian islands and day-trippers from Male.

After the day visitors depart, seize the opportunity to enjoy these creatures in tranquility. Stand in the water and feel the gentle brush of their skin against your feet, a unique and unforgettable experience.

Exercise caution, though, as these wild animals can sting with their tails.
Keep an eye out for the house turtle and black tip reef sharks visible from the jetty.

This was definitely one of our highlights at Fulidhoo every single day.

Snorkel Trips and Diving Excursions

If the house reef doesn’t satiate your appetite for underwater wonders, consider a snorkel excursion. Sharks Bay, a highly recommended spot, offers an opportunity to snorkel with dozens of nurse sharks. Contact Moosa on WhatsApp at +960 794-0999 for a safe and memorable experience. We booked Sharks Bay and Colour Reef for a thrilling 2-3 hours, paying US $120.

Other excursion options include visits to the sandbank “Robinson Crusoe Island,” the wreck, and turtle reef.

Diving at Fulidhoo

For an awe-inspiring diving experience, Fulidhoo boasts a 5-star PADI Dive Centre, one of the best we’ve encountered. Fulidhoo Dive, a professional and friendly dive centre, comes highly recommended.
Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, consider booking dives or trying scuba diving with them. Our kids did a bubble maker session and loved it.
The dive was around the front beach by the jetty, where stingrays and sharks appeared.

Dave and I also did some boat dives and all of them where pretty asome.

Notable dive sites in the Vaavu Atoll include Fotteyo Kandu & Fotteyo Falhu, (Boda) Miyaru Kandu, Alimathaa, Dehekunu Kandu, and Devana Kandu.
Since the beginning of 2023, another dive centre has opened on Fulidhoo, but we recommend to dive with Fulidhoo Dive Centre based on our positive experiences and vibes.

Beaches on Fulidhoo

While resort islands boast pristine beaches where bikini wearing is the norm, Fulidhoo, like other local islands, is a bit different.
You cannot sunbathe anywhere in your bikini. It is a Muslim Island and the locals do not want to see your belly.

However most local islands do have a dedicated bikini beach, where you can sunbathe like on any other resort beach.

On Fulidhoo the Bikini Beach, where you can freely swim, sunbathe, and relax without worrying about covering up is at the right-hand side of the island if standing at the jetty. There is not much shade on this beach.

Other beaches on Fulidhoo provide much more shade, just respect local rules. Best is to wear water shorts and T-shirts. This is what we did and it allowed us to enjoy a perfect swim anywhere on the island.

Local Amenities and Culture

Despite its small size, Fulidhoo caters to all your needs. From a medical clinic and pharmacy to a school and mosque, the island reflects the essence of a traditional Maldivian community.
Keep in mind that the Maldives is a Muslim country, and the calls from the mosque, though frequent, become a part of the island’s charm over time.

The local shop offers seasonal fruits, ice creams, biscuits, water, and various snacks and drinks.
For a diverse culinary experience, explore the café shops and restaurants scattered across the island.

Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

Beyond the natural wonders, Fulidhoo is known for its vibrant cultural events. Don’t miss out on traditional dances like Langiri, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Thaara (big drums). Referred to as Bodu Beyru, these events offer a captivating glimpse into Maldivian traditions.

Check with your host to find out when these cultural festivities are happening and join in for an enchanting evening. Be prepared—you might even be invited to dance alongside the locals.

Evening Delights

For a lively evening, head to the Salsa Bar and Restaurant—a popular spot known for its vibrant atmosphere and delicious food. Offering a range of dishes, including pasta, burgers, and seafood, the establishment also features a bar with a selection of mocktails and other beverages.

We enjoyed the food very much at Thundis Guesthouse. It also made it easy for us, as we could order and come back in half an hour to eat.

Practical Travel Tips

There are no ATMs on the island, so bring USD in cash. You can also withdraw cash at Male Airport, and credit cards are widely accepted.

Mosquito Vigilance

Unlike resort islands that fumigate against mosquitoes, Fulidhoo takes a different approach. Be sure to pack your mosquito repellent and use it, especially during dining experiences in restaurants at all times of the day.

Choosing the Right Season – Vaavu Atoll

For the ultimate Maldivian experience, plan your visit to Vaavu Atoll between December and April—the high season. These months offer the best conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and exciting excursions. With calm waters and unparalleled clarity, this period is a dream for underwater enthusiasts. Dive into the crystal-clear depths and explore the vibrant marine life that defines the Maldives.

Encounters with Majestic Creatures

If encounters with Manta Rays and Whale Sharks top your wishlist, consider June and July. These months provide an increased chance to witness these majestic creatures. However, be prepared for the wetter conditions and reduced visibility during this time.
Despite the occasional downpour, the water temperature remains a comfortable 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Off-Peak Adventures

If you’re open to a mix of weather and activities, October might be your sweet spot. We visited in the middle of October and experienced a bit of everything, including some rain. It’s a great time for a more laid-back adventure, with the added bonus of fewer crowds.

Manta rays had been seen and I spoke to a couple who had spotted Whale sharks. You just never know!

Would we go back to Fulidhoo

We can all openly say YES!
Whether you’re chasing the sun, seeking underwater marvels, or immersing yourself in local culture, Fulidhoo, the local Maldivian island in the Vaavu Atoll has something to offer year-round.

We loved the interaction with the locals, being showed how to fish and having some great conversations.
Another great aspect of Fulidhoo is it size. It is still a smallish Maldivian island, easily possible to walk around and it did not feel overfilled with tourists.

And last but not least, the underwater world was amazing! Simply to see the stingrays and the sharks at the jetty everyday was amazing.
