Switzerland Itinerary from Zurich: What to Know Before You Go

Best time to visit Switzerland

Read more on when the best time is to visit Switzerland in our article.

How many days do you need in Switzerland?

  • 7 days is ideal for a first trip to Switzerland.

It gives you enough time to experience a mix of cities, lakes, and mountain scenery without feeling rushed.

As a Swiss local, I can honestly say you’ll never feel like you’ve seen it all — there are simply too many hidden valleys, mountain villages, and lesser-known regions to explore.

This itinerary follows the classic route I often recommend to my clients during my 1:1 trip planning calls. It covers the highlights you’ve likely seen on Instagram and YouTube – and yes, it’s popular for a reason.

That said, it also means some stops can be busy, especially in peak season. If you’re happy to experience Switzerland’s most iconic places first, this route is a fantastic starting point.

If you’re looking for a quieter, less touristy experience, take a look at my hidden gems Switzerland itinerary.

How to Travel Around Switzerland Efficiently

Switzerland’s public transport system is, quite simply, one of the best in the world.

Trains are punctual, clean, and connect even the most remote mountain regions. Add in boats and buses, and you can travel almost anywhere without needing a car.

For most travellers, the easiest option is to use an all-inclusive transport pass, which covers:

      • Trains, buses, and boats across the country
      • Scenic routes and mountain connections
      • Free entry to over 500 museums

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, many travellers choose guided day trips from Zurich.

Day 1: Arrival in Zurich

Spending your first day in Zurich is actually the perfect introduction to Switzerland. It blends a lively city atmosphere with easy access to nature, all centred around the beautiful Lake Zurich.

With excellent transport links and a compact centre, it’s an ideal place to ease into your trip.

Getting from Zurich Airport to the City

The train from Zurich Airport to the main station (Zürich HB) takes just 10 minutes, with departures every few minutes, simple, quick, and stress-free. I suggest you download the free SBB Mobile App so you always have the correct timings on hand.

What to Do in Zurich (1 Day)

You don’t need long here to get a feel for the city.

  • Wander the Old Town (Altstadt)
Stroll through narrow cobbled street of the Niederdorf, passing historic buildings and the twin towers of Grossmünster. You can climb up if you feel like it.
  • Visit Fraumünster Church
Known for its stunning stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.
  • Lake Zurich Boat Ride
Even a short cruise offers beautiful views towards and is a relaxing activity.
  • Sunset at Uetliberg
Take a short train ride up Zurich’s local mountain for panoramic views over the city and lake. I would recommend this if you do have the full day in Zurich and want to escape the city for a while.

Optional if you come for shopping, walk along the Bahnhofstrasse. One of the world’s most famous shopping streets, even if just for the atmosphere.

Exploring Zürich can be done on your own with the help of our Self-guided city tour guide, or join a guided Zurich city group for more insights and easy flow. The tours from Get your Guide are always fun, great value and you can cancel most tours the day before. You just never really know.

Good to know: If you want to visit the famous Lindt Swiss Chocolate Museum & factory YOU MUST PRE-BOOK your ticket. And most time well in advanced as this activity sells out quickly.

Where to Stay in Zurich

Stay close to the station for convenience, especially as you’ll be leaving early the next morning. Use this map for all your future accommodation search on the itinerary. You see budgets and availability on here.

One of our favourite is the Rubi Mimi Zurich hotel. Rooms are clean, spacious and very close to the train station and centre.

Day 2: Lucerne & Mount Pilatus

Just under an hour from Zurich, Lucerne feels like stepping into a postcard. I recommend you leave Zurich early, so you can fully appreciate Lucerne for the day.

With its lakeside setting and mountain backdrop, it’s one of the most picturesque towns in Switzerland, and a favourite for a reason.

Getting There

Direct trains from Zurich to Lucerne run frequently and take around 45 minutes.

What to Do in Lucerne

Follow our Lucerne Walking Guide which brings you to all the listed sightseeing’s below within the city.

  • Explore the Old Town
Colourful buildings, quiet squares, and historic charm.
  • Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
    The city’s most iconic landmark.
  • Lion Monument
A moving sculpture carved into rock.

Visit Mount Pilatus from Lucerne

This is where your day really becomes unforgettable. The house mountain of Lucerne offers views you have seen on so many videos. There are different ways to visit Mount Pilatus. The direct and cheapest way via Kerns with the Dragon Gondola  or the more scenic way involving a boat ride, cogwheel train and gondolas.

  • Cable car up to the summit
  • Easy panoramic walks
  • Descend via the world’s steepest cogwheel railway
  • Return by boat across Lake Lucerne

To better understand your options read our article on How to visit mount Pilatus from Lucerne.

From Lucerne to Mt Pilatus – How to get there the best way

Visit Mount Rigi from Lucerne

Another option and alternative to Pilatus is to spend a day at Mount Rigi, the queen of the mountains. This alternative is more if you have a bit longer in Lucerne, you arrive really early and want to do some hiking as well.

Where to Stay in Lucerne

I have listed some of the best hotels in Lucerne on our blog. But keep in mind you’re only staying here for one night and most of the time you will be exploring . So you really just need a place to put your head down. One of our favourite and close to the train station with epic views is Hotel des Balances.

Day 3: Bern & Interlaken

Today combines two very different sides of Switzerland, the capital city and the gateway to the Alps.

Stop 1: Bern (Half Day)

Bern’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and feels completely different from Zurich. Plan to spend 2 hours here and explore the Swiss capital before heading to your overnight destination.

  • Medieval arcades and fountains
  • Zytglogge clock tower
  • Views from the Rose Garden

You can follow your 2 Hours in Bern walking Guide to tick off all the above mentioned places.

If you’re here during peak summer and it feels too hot for a city walk you may want to consider to swim in the Aare River

Continue to Interlaken

When you’re done in Bern, continue on the 1 hour train journey along the GoldenPass train line to Interlaken, your base for the next two nights.

Set between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is all about the mountains and the famous getaway to the Bernese Oberland and Jungfrau region.

What to Do in Interlaken

Depending on your arrival time in Interlaken, I recommend taking it easy. Check into your hotel, drop your bags, and spend some time wandering through the town and along the river.

One of the best viewpoints in the area is Harder Kulm, often referred to as Interlaken’s local mountain. The funicular runs until the evening, making it the perfect place to head up for sunset. From the viewing platform, you’ll have incredible views over Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, and the surrounding peaks.

Visit Harder Kulm for Sunset

If you still have energy and feel like doing more, I’ve put together a full guide with some of the best things to do in Interlaken, including a few more adventurous options.

If you’d rather not plan everything yourself, there are also some great guided experiences in Interlaken, from paragliding to scenic boat tours.

Where to stay in Interlaken

You will be here for 2 nights, if you want to splurge a bit stay at the Hotel Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. Key feature for this hotel are luxurious spa, iconic building, and gourmet dining. You wont be disappointed for sure.

A great budget-friendly option right in the center of Interlaken, Hotel Weisses Kreuz offers clean and cozy rooms at an affordable rate. Or an even more budget family friendly option is the Family-run Hotel Blume in Interlaken-West.

This place has a very cozy atmosphere and includes breakfast.

Day 4: Jungfraujoch & Grindelwald

This is one of the most iconic experiences in Switzerland — and for many, the highlight of the trip.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

At 3,454 metres, this is the highest railway station in Europe.

Expect:

  • Snow-covered peaks year-round
  • The Aletsch Glacier – The greatest Glacier in the Alps
  • Ice palace and viewing platforms

It’s a full-day experience, so start early. During peak season you have to pre-book your ticket.

Read our guide to the Jungfraujoch and see if it is worth your money.

On the Way Back

Break up the return journey:

  • Stop at Kleine Scheidegg
  • Walk the scenic trail to Männlichen
  • Cable car down to Grindelwald

The walk between Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen is via the popular “Panoramaweg” (Panorama Trail), which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours on the 4.5km long trail. Walking the trail from this side you will encounter a slight uphill but nothing too hard. All along you get stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

Return to Interlaken for your second night.

Alternative visit Grindelwald First

If Jungfraujoch feels a little out of budget, don’t worry – you won’t miss out on the scenery. A wonderful alternative is heading up to Grindelwald First and hiking to Bachalpsee, where you’ll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful mountain views in the region.

The First mountain with the walking Cliff Walk in Grindelwald

Day 5: Zermatt & the Matterhorn

Today you head deeper into the Alps and visit the famous Tobleron Mountain – The matterhorn. Zermatt is our happy place. There simply is not a bad day to be lived in Zermatt.

Getting to Zermatt

The train journey takes around 2.5 hours and is part of the experience – with stunning views along the way.

The train will bring you straight in to Zermatt. Apart from (quite a few) electric taxies, Zermatt is car-free and sits at the foot of the famous Matterhorn.

What to Do in Zermatt

There’s so much to do in Zermatt that choosing how to spend your time can feel a little overwhelming. Below, I’ve included a mix of experiences — from iconic mountain viewpoints to more budget-friendly options.

If you’d like to experience Zermatt to the fullest, I recommend getting a 2-day Peak2Peak pass, which gives you access to multiple cable cars and mountain railways, allowing you to explore different viewpoints with ease. If you’re travelling with a Swiss Travel Pass, you’ll usually receive a 50% discount, and children under 9 travel free — but it’s always worth checking the latest details before booking.

Alternatively, you can simply choose one or two mountains to visit and purchase individual tickets, depending on your interests and budget.

Before making a desicion read through our article where we feature 17 of the best things to do in Zermatt.

Some options are

  • Gornergrat Railway
One of the best viewpoints of the Matterhorn.
  • Easy and free Alpine walks
Scenic and accessible without needing serious hiking experience.
  • Explore the village
Traditional wooden chalets and a cosy atmosphere.

Stay overnight in Zermatt

If you want to make the most of your time in Zermatt, I’d suggest choosing a more budget-friendly hotel and saving your budget for the mountain experiences – this is where Zermatt really shines.

That said, if you’re looking to treat yourself and the family, one of our favourite stays is Hotel National. It’s ideally located next to the Sunnegga lift, making it perfect for easy mountain access, and it also offers a lovely indoor pool and excellent food — a great option for a more relaxed and comfortable stay.

Day 6: Glacier Views & Sion

Start your morning with one more unforgettable mountain experience. Whatever you didn’t do yesterday you can do it today.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Take the cable car up to Klein Matterhorn, the highest cable car station in Europe.

Views here stretch across multiple countries on a clear day. And if you have a 4000m peak map you could tick off nearly 40 peaks. At the top you step into the worlds highest glacier palace which we found surreal and breathtakingly beautiful. Make the most out of your day in Zermatt as you’re only travelling back to Sion after exploring Zermatt.

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in Zermatt – An Epic Family Experience

Continue to Sion by train

In the late afternoon, travel to Sion the capital city of Valais region.

What to Do in Sion

  • Walk up to Valère and Tourbillon castles
  • Explore the old town
  • Enjoy a relaxed evening with local wine
  • Visit Les Illes if you like to swim or have some climbing activities for the kids.

Where to stay one night in Sion

We recommend to stay at the, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sion by IHG. The rooms are bright, it is centrally located with castle views.

Day 7: Montreux & Departure

Your final stop brings you to the shores of Lake Geneva.

Montreux Highlights

  • Chillon Castle
One of Switzerland’s most beautiful lakeside castles.
  • Lakeside promenade walk by Freddy Murcery Statue
  • Charly Chaplin Museum

If your flight is tonight I would definitely suggest to walk around the lakeside promenade, have an ice cream and just relax on more time by the water.

If you have more time read our post about things to do in Montreux.

Travel to the Airport

Your 1 week Switzerland itinerary from Zurich has come to an end. As you travel back to the airport by train, take a moment to look out the window and soak it all in one last time, the mountains, the lakes, and the small villages you’ve passed along the way.

It’s often in these quiet moments that you realise just how much you’ve experienced in such a short time.

  • Geneva Airport (1.5 hours)
  • Zurich Airport (around 3 hours)

Can You Do This Switzerland Itinerary in Reverse?

Yes – you can start in Montreux or Geneva instead, but:

      • Starting in Zurich is easier for most travellers
      • Shorter first travel day
      • Better flight connections

Final Thoughts on This 1 Week Switzerland Itinerary

With just 7 days in Switzerland, you won’t see everything, but this route gives you a truly memorable introduction.

It combines:

      • Cities and culture
      • Iconic mountain experiences
      • Scenic train journeys
      • Lakeside relaxation

It’s also designed to feel doable, not exhausting — which makes a huge difference once you’re actually travelling.
