Renting a car in Lofoten – Norway is pretty straightforward.
You need to have a full driving license older than one year, be +19 years of age, and as long as the license is written with the Roman alphabet, you’re good to go. However, always check again, with the authority, that your driving license doesn’t need any specific requirements.
Always make sure you drive with your headlights on at all times. It is mandatory.
General speed restrictions

- Built-up areas & urban areas – 50 km/h (30 miles/h)
- Other signposted speed limits – 30 km/h (18 miles/h) – 110 km/h (68 miles/h)

If you manage to get a great flight directly into one of the Lofoten Airports, Leknes or Svolvær , you can pick up a rental car there.

Norway isn’t the cheapest country, but you can save on car rental:
- Book early – Especially for summer (June–August)
- Compare different pickup locations (sometimes Bodø is cheaper)

4-wheel drive car in Lofoten or 2-wheel drive
I don’t believe you need a 4-wheel drive car in Norway and most definitely not in Lofoten. Even when visiting Lofoten during the winter months. Just make sure you have good winter tires.
The mountain passes are very well maintained and the price difference between a 4×4 and an economy rental car is just crazy and not worth spending. But hey, this is my opinion.
Electric Cars
Norway is one of the most equipped electric car charging nations in Europe. Therefore, if you wish to rent an electric car in Norway, it is a good option.

Renting a Campervan & RVs
This is the most popular traveling option in Norway especially during the summer months. Every second car is either a campervan or an RV. Norway is very popular with campers.
If this is your preferred choice of traveling make sure you book your camper well in advance if you travel during the midnight sun season (summer).
In a lot of places Norway still has the right to roam law. This means if you’re a minimum of 150 m away from houses, self-sufficient (toilet on board) and there is not an obvious, camping-forbidden sign, you are good to park for the night.
But unfortunately, a lot of people are abusing this freedom and, in more and more places, the “camping forbidden” sign is going up.
Luckily, there are many official campgrounds in Lofoten and throughout Norway, which still makes camping a great choice when road-tripping in Norway.
Tolls & Ferries
If you’re renting your car outside Lofoten for example in Bodø, you must not forget that you will enter Lofoten by ferry. And if you have been visiting other parts of Norway there is a great chance that in the land of Fjords, you have been on one or two ferries already.
All rental cars in Norway will come with an already-fitted AutoPass sticker. Therefore you DO NOT NEED TO PAY upfront for any ferry crossing.

AutoPass Program
Because most ferries are part of the AutoPASS program, your rental car AutoPASS chip acts as your ticket, and you pay the rental company when you return the car.
However, there are some private ferries for which you need to pay in advance so make sure you do your research on each ferry beforehand to avoid surprises.
Good to know:
If you have to take an overnight ferry, I recommend booking it in advance. But normally for shorter ferries you can just turn up and get your ticket. They do run very frequently.
Ferry Cost
The cost is calculated on the length of the vehicle. Up to 6 metres is considered a normal car. Campervans larger than 6 metres cost double.
Toll Roads
You can’t avoid the toll roads. They bring you safely and in good road conditions from A to B.
Like with the ferries, it works on the AutoPass program. When you return your rental car the summary of all toll roads taken and ferry crossing will be added to your final invoice.
Road Conditions in Lofoten (What to Expect)
Driving in Lofoten is an unforgettable experience – but it’s good to know what you’re getting into:
During our visit in October, the roads were empty. It was nice driving the Lofoten roads and we had no trouble finding lay bays to stop and enjoy the views.
Now, this might not be possible during the peak summer season. One local told us that he normally needs 15 minutes to travel from his home to work. However, during peak holiday seasons this journey can take up to one hour or more.
Yes, Lofoten is beautiful but it is also very popular in summer.
- Narrow Roads: Many are one-lane with passing bays. Always drive slowly and watch for oncoming traffic.
- Tunnels and Bridges: Expect lots of them — some tunnels are very dark!
- Weather Changes Fast: Rain, snow, or strong winds can appear suddenly.
- Winter Driving: (November–March) Make sure your rental has proper winter tires.
- Speed Limits: Generally 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on open roads.
- Ferries: Some small ferries connect islands — check schedules if you’re planning routes.
Good to know:
Norwegians are very polite drivers — and you should be too! Always yield to traffic coming uphill or to the right at intersections.
Road Closures
It is not uncommon that roads will be closed suddenly, also during the summer months. This is mainly due to rock falls, slides, and big storms where winds are getting strong.
