If you and your family love a combination of hiking, a playground, cable car rides and even a boat trip, then the Klewenalp – Stockhütte the Goldi Family Safari is exactly your kind of day trip in Switzerland.
The Goldi Safari is actually more than just a hike at Klewenalp. It is a full day scenic tour which includes a short hike and 5 other modes of transportation.
A cable car ride, a hike, a gondola or mountain scooter decent, a short bus ride followed by a funicular trip.
And to terminate the tour enjoy a boat cruise back to the starting point at Beckenried. Why not finish the day with a refreshing swim in Lake Lucerne?
Video – Klewenalp – Stockhütte the Goldi family Safari! Enjoy!

Starting the Goldi Family Safari
From Beckenried in Canton Nidwalden take the Klewenalp gondola (which departs on a regular basis) to the starting point of the Goldi Safari at Klewenalp, 1600 metres above sea level.
In Beckenried at the Klewenalp gondola station there is a large payable car park which is only a short 5 min walk away from the boat jetty where you will terminate this family friendly day trip.
At the ticket office let them know you will be doing the Goldi Family Safari and they will issue tickets for the various transport used in the tour.
Once you have arrived at Klewenalp take a few minutes and admire the amazing views over Lake Lucerne to The Rigi-Queen of the Mountains, the mighty peaks of the small and large Mythen to your right, and far in the distance on your left to Lucerne and beyond.
Whilst you are checking out the surrounding mountain tops the kids can have their 1st play at the wooden playground where a zip line, different balance obstacles and a climbing wall will keep them occupied.
You will also find toilets and a restaurant here.

On the hiking trail
Follow the signs in the direction of Stockhütte. The hiking path will take you away from the panorama view of the lake for a while, passing the Klewenalp church. At the Alpstubli restaurant the path splits. Take the right hand path for a flat/pushchair friendly route.
The left hand path is NOT pushchair friendly and does have the incline to negotiate, but it does eventually head into the forest which is nice on a hot day.
Option one : To the left the sign points in the direction of Stockhütte and Klettersteig (climbing wall and via ferrata)
The path will be continue to ascend for about 5 more minutes until you have reached the highest point of this hike. It is also here where you find the Ergglen BBQ place and the cool family climbing wall and via ferrata.
Once at the forest it changes to a mostly narrow downhill, path until it joins again with the pushchair trail (option two).
From here onwards the path all the way to the Stockhütte is wider and not so steep like before.

Option Two – possible with a pushchair: From where the path splits just after the Alpstübli restaurant about 10 minutes hike from Klewenalp, take the right wider path.
This path is wider and goes around the forest before it meets again with the trail from option one.
NOTE: Although it says pushchair, you have to know that it is path with little gravel stones. Unless you have an all terrain pushchair maybe your little one would be better in a carrier (my opinion).
Good to know:
Where the two trails meet again you will find a BBQ station with wood.
When you are on the last stretch to Stockhütte (both options) you will pass some of the “Bogenpark” – Archery Park stations. We have never seen one before, but found it interesting.
Signs at each station indicate that a wooden animal is somewhere within the area which archers use a target practice. It kept the kids busy finding all the animals at each station.
If this is an activity you are familiar with, then voilà, the Bogenpark is another great thing to do at Klewenalp – Stockhütte.
Hiking Map Klewenalp – Stockhütte
CLICK on the map below to gain full access. On the picture you will see the pink line which indicates the push-chair trail which will not be seen on the actual hiking map. But as mentioned above just turn right at the Alpstübli restaurant and you will be on the right path.

Arriving at Stockhütte 1400m
Once the kids see the amazing playground at Stockhütte their energy will be renewed and any fatigue from the hike will be forgotten.
So much choice that they will need at least 15 minutes to check it all out before they find their favourite activity at Stockhütte.
Trampoline, barefoot path, water station, zip line, slide and more.
Thanks to the “Schweizer Familie” there are two large BBQ stations available with wood provided, which is by the way, is quite common in the Lake Lucerne region. An amazing service!
At some BBQ places you will even find fire lighters, matches and tools! But best to bring your own if you plan to make a fire.
At Stockhütte there is also a self-service restaurant. A great place for a meal with the family whilst sitting on the sunny terrace enjoying views down to Lake Lucerne.

Gondola or Bike-Board (Mountain Scooters) to Emmetten
To carry on the Goldi Safari Klewenalp-Stockhütte, you have again the choice of two options.
Either take a seat and enjoy the view over the lake in a 10 min gondola ride down to Emmetten.
The Stockhütte gondola runs from the end of May to the end of October continually from 9:00 – 17:30 but has a break for lunch Mon-Fri from 11:45 to 13:00. At weekends the gondola runs non-stop.
Tickets are included in the Goldi Safari Klewenalp-Stockhütte day tour.
Option two would be a fun ride on a bike board down to Emmetten.
There is no better way to go down the mountain than with a scooter. Here at the Klewenalp- Stockhütte they have three wheelers called bike boards. And the best thing if they are not old enough to have their own, kids can ride on the bike board of their parents.

Not many mountain stations offer an activity allowing to ride together. But here they do and so we took the opportunity and went down the mountain on the scooters.
They felt really safe and because they run on three wheels and have springs at the rear, the scooter moved perfectly. Plenty of space to ride with the kids as well.
Helmets are mandatory and available when renting the bike. Bike board rental is not included in the Goldi Safari tickets and need to be rented at the Stockhütte station Chf /15.- per bike.
The views of Lake Lucerne and the surroundings are breathtaking. They say it will take about 30 minutes to reach Emmetten, but if you like to stop and make photos like us, count one hour.

If this activity is something you love there are two more mountain stations that are allowing double rides on mountain scooters. Check out Our day at the Hasliberg- Meiringen and The Ämpächli Kids paradise in Elm
By Bus from Emmetten to Seelisberg & Funicular to Treib
This stretch is quick and easy, simply head to the bus stop which is only 2 minutes walk from the Emmetten Gondola station where you will have deposited the bike boards.
The journey over to Seelisberg takes 13 minutes and passes by the pretty little lake with the same name – Seelisbergsee.
This is the centre of Switzerland where history was made and the foundation of Switzerland signed and sealed at the nearby Rütli Wiese. Just some insider info!
The bus journey terminates at the funicular station. Awaiting is the funicular to Treib, a short but steep ride to the shore of Lake Lucerne from where you will catch the boat back to Beckenried.
Note: The bus from Emmetten to Seelisberg runs once every hour on xx:25. The journey takes 13 minutes and connects nicely for the funicular and then the boat.
The boat back to Beckenried also just runs every hour on xx:57 and gives a lovely 35 minutes cruise on Lake Lucerne.
All these modes of transport are included in the Klewenalp- Stockhütte Goldi Family Safari ticket.

Stay the Night at Klewenalp
Alternatively, you could plan to stay the night at Klewenalp and experience a wonderful sunset. Just the perfect thing to do to finish such a beautiful day in the Lake Lucerne Region.
If this is an option which interests you check with Klewenalp Bergbahnen the situation of the Klewenalp Stube 1600.
When we visited there where some minor issues on the organisational front with the hotel. There has been a change of ownership and some things need to be sorted out.
I would suggest only book one of their simple rooms, have a BBQ picnic on the nearby ” Schweizer Familie” fire-pit overlooking Lake Lucerne and the mountains. This was a very nice evening for us.
For the rooms, they do have a family room with private bathroom, otherwise it is all multi bed rooms with shared bathroom. And as mentioned, it is simple.
You may want to book breakfast at the hotel, but just check beforehand if this is an option and if the service is available.
Alternatively check out the Klewenstock Restaurant & Hotel that also offers rooms. It is 15 min walk from the Klewenalp Gondola and on the hiking path of the Goldi Family Safari.
A further possibility would be to overnight at the Stockhütte and carry on with your Goldi Family Safari the next day. But you would need to check with Klewenalp-Bergbahnen regarding your tickets to see whether they are valid 24 hours or just for the day.

Where best to stay in Beckenried
If you prefer to stay by the lake then the choice is large. Here are a few options that looked inviting to us when we passed by.
Superior Hotel Nidwaldnerhof
Located right at the shore of Lake Lucerne, Superior Hotel Nidwaldnerhof features a lake-view terrace. A plus point is the free garage parking.
Seerausch Swiss Quality Hotel
Right on the shore of Lake Lucerne, Hotel Seerausch in Beckenried offers panoramic lake and mountain views.
