If you’re planning a trip to Lugano and wondering whether it’s worth bringing your bikes — the short answer is: yes.

When our kids got their first proper bikes, they were on them every chance they had. So when we planned our trip to Ticino, we decided to take them along and see how family-friendly cycling in Lugano really is.

And honestly, we were pleasantly surprised.

From easy lakeside paths to scenic routes just outside the city, there are some fantastic bike routes in Lugano for families — you just need to know where to go.

In this guide, we’re sharing the routes we tested ourselves, what worked (and what didn’t), and everything you need to know before cycling in Lugano with kids.

Why Bring Your Bikes to Lugano?

Bringing our bikes completely changed how we experienced Lugano.

  • It gave the kids a new sense of independence
  • Getting around was quicker and easier
  • It allowed us to explore beyond the main sights
  • And it turned the whole trip into a bit of an adventure

We also wanted to find out how easy it is to travel with bikes by train in Switzerland — and Lugano turned out to be the perfect place to try it.

Getting to Lugano by Train with Bikes

We travelled from Zürich to Lugano by train — and it was much easier than expected.
Once the bikes are on the train, it’s a direct journey of around two hours. No stressful transfers, just a scenic ride through Switzerland and into Ticino.

If there had been multiple train changes, we probably would have taken the car. But this route was simple and relaxed — even with kids and bikes.

Cycling in Lugano with Kids – What to Expect

One thing we quickly learned: Lugano is not completely flat. There are a few hills, especially around the city, so be prepared for some uphill sections. Depending on your kids, that might mean a bit of pushing — or turning it into a small challenge.

That said, there are ways around it. The funicular from Lugano city up to the train station was a game changer for us. Instead of cycling uphill every time, we simply used the funicular — and with the Ticino Ticket, it’s included.

Once you know this, getting around Lugano by bike becomes much easier.

Tip: These days most parents have an e-bike and the Towwhee rope system is just perfect to pull the kids when needed.

Using Funiculars to Make Life Easier

There are two funiculars in Lugano that are especially useful when cycling with kids:

  • Lugano Città → Train Station
  • Cassarate → Monte Brè area

We used both during our stay, especially after long days when nobody felt like cycling uphill anymore.

It’s one of those small things that makes a big difference when travelling as a family.

Best Bike Routes in Lugano for Families

Here are the routes we tested ourselves — including our favourite.

Cycling Along Lake Lugano

If you’re staying near Paradiso, you’re in a great spot to start one of the easiest and most scenic rides in Lugano.

A dedicated lakeside path leads you straight towards the city, with constant views over Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. It’s one of those rides where you don’t feel like you’re trying to get somewhere — you just enjoy the journey.

For us, this quickly became one of our favourite easy rides. The kids could cycle freely, we could take it slow, and there were plenty of little spots along the way to stop and take it all in.

As you get closer to the city centre, the path briefly joins the road. But we simply stayed on the wide pedestrian path, reduced our speed and felt completely comfortable doing so.

Parco Ciani & City Cycling

Parco Ciani is one of the nicest areas to explore by bike in Lugano.
You can cycle freely through the park, enjoy the lake views and stop at:

  • the playground
  • the beach area

As always with kids, this meant a few longer stops than planned — but that’s part of it.

Olive Grove Path Access (Bike + Walk)

One of the biggest advantages of having bikes was reaching places that are just a bit too far to walk. The Olive Grove Path is one of those. We cycled through Lugano, along the lake and up towards Castagnola, then down to the start of the trail.

The downhill ride was easy — the way back up looked less fun… until I remembered I was on an e-bike.

Let’s just say: the kids were very happy about that decision

Best Bike Route Near Lugano for Families

Agno to Caslano Lugano Lake Shore

This was, without a doubt, our favourite bike route in the Lugano region. The reason why we liked it so much there is because the kids could just be free. They were still little when we visited.
And before you ask (because we did too) — yes, this is still Lake Lugano

Getting There

From Lugano, take the local train to Agno.
We had a bit of a “Harry Potter platform moment” trying to find platform 12… only to realise it’s actually just outside the main station on the lake side. Cross the road and take the ramp down — much less magical than expected, but easy once you know.
From Agno station, the bike and pedestrian path is just a short ride away, passing a large palyground!

The route follows the lake all the way to Caslano and is perfect for families.
You’ll cycle past:

  • small harbours
  • quiet beaches
  • plenty of spots to stop and take a break

On warm days, it’s hard to resist jumping in — so bringing swimwear is definitely a good idea.

What to Expect

There’s only one short section where you’ll need to ride on a road, in Magliaso, through a residential area with low traffic (around 30 km/h).
Other than that, the route is:

  • mostly flat
  • very easy to follow
  • and almost entirely traffic-free

Bike Ride to Origlio Lake

This route is a bit more challenging, but still doable with older kids. ( Or e-bike and pull system)

From Lugano, take the train to Taverne, then follow the cycling signs towards Origlio Lake.
There is a steady uphill section at the beginning, which can be tough depending on conditions. The day we went, it was cold and windy — not ideal.

Halfway through, we adjusted the route slightly and took a shortcut to the lake.
And that’s actually an important lesson:

Don’t be afraid to adapt your route when travelling with kids.
Once at the lake, it’s peaceful and a lovely place to take a break before heading back.

Important Tips for Cycling in Lugano with Kids

Use the Ticino Ticket

It makes getting around much easier. Ask your accommodation provider (hotel, hostel or campsite) for the Ticino Ticket — it’s usually included with your stay. With it, you can travel for free on public transport across Ticino and also benefit from discounts on various attractions.

Don’t forget your bike ticket

Your bike is not included in your train ticket, so you’ll need to buy one separately. For shorter journeys, a half-price 2nd class point-to-point ticket is usually enough and can be purchased at the station.
Children under the age of 6 don’t need a ticket for their bikes.

Plan around the hills

Lugano isn’t flat, and you’ll come across a few climbs, especially in the city. But don’t let that put you off — the funiculars make a big difference and are easy to use with bikes.

Adapt your routes

Not every route will go exactly as planned — especially with kids. We changed our plans more than once, and it often made the day better. Stay flexible and adjust as you go.

  1. Next time you’re around there’s a great cycling path from Lugano/Canobbio to Tesserete… It runs along the old route of the Lugano-Tesserete electrical railway, and it is full of interesting panels that tell you the story of this railway. Once you get to Tesserete you can find a very nice shaded playground by the swimming-pool and with little pumptrack.
And btw, I really do not understand why Ticino Turismo suggested you’d cycle to Origlio. Origlio lake is very pretty, but local families here do not regard it as a family-friendly cycling route.

    • Hi Augusta
Oh thank you so much for your tip. I will definitely keep this in mind. Yeh, we learned the hard way with Origlio 🙂 ! The kids did well though climbing to the top, or mummy pushing the bikes (especially the last bit) not sure which one :). This is way I mentioned for families with kids that have some experience in biking. But anyway we had a great time and loved to explore. Top was for sure Caslano!!! But also in general to have the bikes within Lugano was great! Thanks again
      take care Corina
