Important Safety Tips for Swimming in Vallemaggia
Before you dive into the crystal-clear waters of Vallemaggia, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential dangers, especially after heavy rainfall. The water flow in the valley can become intense and hazardous. Dams located upstream may release additional water, creating conditions that are unsafe for swimming. Always check the local conditions before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

1. Ponte Brolla – Tegna
Vallemaggia’s first must-visit swimming spot is at Ponte Brolla, near the village of Tegna. This area boasts two fantastic locations along the Maggia River.
At Ponte Brolla, you’ll find the Orrido di Ponte Brolla, (check on Google Maps) known for its dramatic gorge and impressive glacial potholes. It’s a hotspot for cliff jumping, with jumps ranging from 2 to 8 metres, catering to both cautious and adventurous thrill-seekers. Ponte Brolla even hosts cliff-jumping competitions, making it a favourite among adrenaline junkies.
After you’ve had your fill of cliff diving, head further down to Pozzo di Tegna in the village of Tegna itself.
Here, you’ll discover a beautiful sandy beach and serene swimming pools. When the water levels are high, you can even catch a glimpse of the stunning Ponte Brolla waterfall.

How to Access the Swimming Spots at Ponte Brolla
By Bicycle:
Many areas along Vallemaggia, including Ponte Brolla, are easily accessible by bicycle, offering a scenic and eco-friendly way to explore the region.
By car:
To Orrido di Ponte Brolla (cliff jumping)
If you prefer to drive, take the Ponte Brolla Road. A few hundred metres after, look for cars parked on the left. I have marked it on my Google map above. There are multiple access points, but this one is the most straightforward. However, be prepared for a bit of a scramble down to the rocks and back up again.
To Pozzo di Tegna: (sandy beach)
For Pozzo di Tegna, park at the Posteggio Pozzo di Tegna parking lot within Tegna village, conveniently located near the sandy beach.
Ponte Brolla, located in the charming village of Tegna, is just a 10-15 minute drive from Locarno. Given the limited parking available at these popular swimming spots along the Maggia River, we highly recommend arriving by bus, train, or bicycle.
By Bus / Train:
From Locarno, it’s an easy 15-minute bus ride on line 315 to Ponte Brolla.
You can also hop on a train to Ponte Brolla station from Locarno.
For a better understanding check out my Google map above.

Walking from the Bus or Train Stop
To Orrido di Ponte Brolla (cliff jumping)
To reach Orrido di Ponte Brolla and its famous cliff jumps, walk along the main road of Ponte Brolla (direction Maggia Valley) until you see cars parked along the side. You’ll find a steep path here that leads down to the rocks.
To Pozzo di Tegna (sandy beach)
Once you arrive at Ponte Brolla station, it’s a short and pleasant walk to Pozzo di Tegna. Simply follow the road across the bridge and take the pathway toward Tegna village.
Explore Tegna Village
After enjoying a swim in the Maggia River, take some time to visit the picturesque village of Tegna. Home to around 800 residents, Tegna is known not only for its sandy beach by the river but also for its prehistoric artifacts scattered throughout the village. It’s part of the Swiss heritage sites of national significance, making it a must-see for history enthusiasts.
Dining in Tegna
Tegna boasts several popular restaurants, some of which offer stunning views of the River Maggia. We dined at Grotto America,(see on my Google map) which specializes in the famous Polenta dish. If Polenta isn’t to your taste, there are four other restaurants in the same area, including a pizzeria. During peak season, reservations are highly recommended.
2. Cascata delle Sponde III – Valle Maggia
If you’re looking for a perfect swimming spot by a waterfall in Vallemaggia, Cascata delle Sponde III is a hidden gem you shouldn’t miss. Nestled between the villages of Someo and Riveo, this serene location offers a refreshing escape into nature.
The pool in front of the waterfall is surrounded by shady areas, perfect for relaxing, and the river inlet nearby adds to the charm. With easy access from the road and relatively safe swimming conditions, Cascata delle Sponde III is a favourite among families. The water is deep enough for adventurous jumps from the waterfall side, yet shallow enough for children to safely play. And of course, swimming under the falls for a natural shower is an experience you won’t forget.
Despite its appeal, this spot remains peaceful and uncrowded. We visited twice and found it pleasantly quiet each time.
How to Access Cascata delle Sponde III
By Car:
You can also reach the waterfall by car, though parking is limited. The entry point is on the right-hand side of the road (Via Cantonale) if you’re driving up from Someo toward Vallemaggia. Keep an eye out for parked cars along the road, or simply use Google Maps to guide you.
By Bicycle:
Cascata delle Sponde III is easily accessible by bicycle, making it a great stop on a ride through Vallemaggia.
By Bus:
From Locarno (40 minutes) or within the Maggia Valley take bus 315 to the bus stop Riveo, Chiesa. From there it is only a 6-minute walk. You can find the location on my Google Map.
There’s a portable green toilet at the roadside, but no other facilities or restaurants nearby, so be sure to bring everything you need for your visit.

3. Cascata del Salto – Maggia Village
Cascata del Salto is a spectacular waterfall located in the village of Maggia, Ticino. With three cascading falls merging into one powerful plunge, it creates a large, deep swimming pool at the base—perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day. However, due to its beauty and accessibility, this spot can get quite busy during peak season.
Downstream from the main falls, the Salto River features smaller water pools where families often settle in for the day. While the immediate area around the falls has limited space for laying out towels, the stunning scenery and invigorating swim make it a must-visit spot in Vallemaggia.
How to Access Cascata del Salto
Cascata del Salto is easily accessible from Locarno, making it a popular destination not only for tourists but also for locals.
By Bus:
From Locarno, take bus line 315 for a 30-minute ride to Maggia Centro.
By Car:
Drive to Maggia village and park at the small car park near the community centre.
Directions to the Falls from Maggia Bus Stop
Once you arrive at Maggia Centro, follow the brown signs labeled “Cascata del Salto.” The walk to the falls takes about 20 minutes.
By Bicycle:
Follow the signs until the path enters the forest, leaving the houses behind. You’ll need to leave your bike at the forest’s edge and continue on foot.
Initially, the path leads down to smaller water pools ideal for families. To reach the main falls, stay on the main forest path and continue uphill until you arrive at the base of Cascata del Salto.

Hike to Cascata del Salto via Capela Da La Pioda
For those who enjoy hiking, consider reaching Cascata del Salto via the Capela da La Pioda. This short loop from Maggia Village is part of the “Giro della Valle del Salto” trail.
Instead of directly following the signs to the falls, take the route marked for Giro della Valle del Salto or Capela Da La Pioda. We recommend hiking up on the right-hand side of the river (anticlockwise) and descending on the left-hand side. As you near the village, you’ll pick up the brown signs guiding you to Cascata del Salto.

4. Lago del Sambuco – Val Lavizzara, Upper Vallemaggia
If the Maggia River or the stunning waterfalls in Vallemaggia aren’t enough to satisfy your need for natural beauty, consider heading higher into the mountains of Val Lavizzara. Here, along a scenic and winding road, you’ll discover Lago del Sambuco, a serene mountain lake nestled at 1,461 metres above sea level.
How to Access the Swimming Spot at Lago del Sambuco
Though it may not be the easiest location to reach, the effort is well worth it for those seeking a peaceful and refreshing swim in a pristine alpine setting.
By Bus:
Like many places in Canton Ticino, Lago del Sambuco is accessible by public transport. From Locarno Stazione, take the bus to Fusio, Paese (the end station), which takes around 2 hours. Once you arrive, walk along the small road on the right-hand side of the lake, nearly to the end, where you’ll find easy access to the water.
By Car:
Driving is a more convenient option for reaching Lago del Sambuco. Once you arrive in Fusio, continue driving up to the dam, then follow the narrow road along the right-hand side of the lake. Although the road is tight, there are several passing places. As you gain altitude on the last half of the lake, look for a small parking area. From here, you’ll find easy access to the water.

Dining Options Near Lago del Sambuco
If you’re looking for a place to eat, stop at Grottino Lago Sambuco in Fusio, located just before the dam wall. Once you’re at the lake, there are no additional facilities or restaurants, so it’s a good idea to bring any food or supplies you might need.
Extra Tip: Explore Lago di Narèt
If you’re up for more adventure, continue driving uphill along the same road to reach Lago di Narèt, the source of the Maggia River. On the way, you’ll pass Lago di Sassolo and Lago Superiore. We haven’t explored this area yet, but it’s high on our list for our next visit to Ticino. The region is known for its breathtaking hiking trails.
Must-See: Mogno’s Church by Mario Botta
Before you ascend the winding road to Fusio, take a moment to stop in the tiny alpine village of Mogno. Here, you’ll find La Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, an architectural marvel designed by the renowned architect Mario Botta. Plan to spend about 30 minutes to fully appreciate this unique church.
Where to stay in the Maggia Valley
Although you could stay in a hotel around the Locarno-Ascona area, we chose a Hotel within the Vallemaggia. The reason is simple, you can access a large part with your bicycle. The canton is constructing more bike trails throughout the valley. Perfect also for families because there is only a small amount of trails where you have to actually bike on the main road. The rest is all on dedicated bike trails.
Our base for 3 days in Vallemaggia was at the newly managed Locanda Villa d’Epoca. Perfect for families. The hotel has a large garden ideal for play and the food was delicious.
