How to Get to Lugano

Lugano is one of the easiest destinations to reach in southern Switzerland, which makes it perfect for a short break or even part of a longer Switzerland itinerary.

For this family trip, we travelled to Lugano by train with our bikes. Thanks to the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the journey from Zürich now takes under two hours.

If you’re travelling with bikes, remember that reservations may be required depending on the train route and time of year. Your Swiss train ticket alone may not cover the bikes. We explain exactly how it works in our guide to taking bikes on Swiss trains.

We started our journey from Zürich and arrived in Lugano in less than two hours, ready to begin our 4 day Lugano itinerary. The journey is so quick that you could even plan a day trip from Zürich to Lugano — although staying longer is absolutely worth it.

Day 1: Arrive in Lugano and Explore Parco Ciani

Check-in in Lugano

After arriving in Lugano, we made our way down from Paradiso station to our hotel by bike.

We stayed at Hotel De La Paix, located close to the lake near Paradiso. It’s one of the older hotels in Lugano, but the location was excellent and the room was spacious enough for all of us. Maybe not the most exciting hotel in Lugano, to be honest — but it worked perfectly for what we needed.

The real highlight was the view, looking across to Monte San Salvatore and down towards Lake Lugano.

Explore Parco Ciani

With a full afternoon ahead of us, we headed straight out to explore.

One of the nicest things about Lugano is how easy it is to get around by bike. From Paradiso, a dedicated lakeside path runs all the way into the centre, making it perfect for families.

Our destination was Parco Ciani, one of the most beautiful parks in Lugano.

With its lake views, shady paths, flower beds and large playground, it’s a lovely place to unwind after your journey.

The park has two distinct sections. A more formal garden area with neat lawns and flowers, and a quieter, wilder part closer to the lake, where you’ll also find the beach and play area.

Having the bikes with us was a huge plus. The kids spent quite a bit of time down by the lake and at the playground. It’s especially lovely in the late afternoon and also makes a great sunset spot.

We all agreed that this is the perfect way to start any Lugano itinerary, especially after a travel day.

Lugano is one of the best places to visit in Ticino if you’re looking for a mix of nature, lake views and easy outdoor activities.

You’ll also find this stop and more ideas around Lugano marked on our Ticino Map.

Day 2: Origlio Lake & Sunset at Parco San Michele

Bike to Origlio Lake

If you want to explore beyond Lugano city, a bike ride to Origlio Lake is a lovely option.

Located just outside the city, this small lake feels completely different — quiet, green and surrounded by nature.

We originally planned to follow the full bike route (No. 357 on the Ticino Turismo bike map), but strong winds and a steady uphill made us adjust the route slightly. The kids were still young at this point and we did not had ebikes at this time.

In the end, we chose a shorter option, which worked much better for the whole family.

Even with the change, we passed some beautiful scenery along the way, including a small church that really stood out.

Once at the lake, you can either walk around it or simply relax by the park and playground. When we visited, it felt incredibly peaceful — almost like we had it to ourselves.

Tip:
If you take the shorter route like we did, be aware that part of the ride follows a main road.

How to Get to Origlio

If you prefer not to cycle the full way, you can combine train and bike.

From Lugano, take the train to Torricella–Taverne.
With the Ticino Ticket, your journey is covered — you only need to pay for the bike transport.

Sunset at Parco San Michele

After a short rest back at the hotel, we decided to head out again for sunset — and this turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip.

We had heard about Parco San Michele as a bit of a hidden spot above Lugano, and it absolutely lived up to expectations.

To get there, we cycled to Cassarate and took the funicular up towards Monte Brè. We left the bikes at the station and continued on foot.

From the upper station, it’s only about a 5-minute walk to the park.

And then — the view.

Looking out over Lugano, the lake and the surrounding mountains as the sun sets is something really special.

We brought a simple picnic with us, sat on a bench and just enjoyed the moment.

It’s one of those places where you don’t need to do much — just sit, take it in and slow down. This places is so special and deserves a place on the list of the 24 best things to do in Ticino.

Day 3: Lugano City, La Via del Ceneri & Monte San Salvatore

Visit Lugano City

Before heading out for the hike, we took some time to walk through Lugano city on our way to the train station.

Even if you’re more drawn to mountains and nature (like we are), it’s still well worth exploring the city a little. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful frescoes, small churches and quiet side streets that give Lugano its charm.

Since you’ll likely pass through anyway, it’s the perfect moment to slow down and turn it into a bit of a cultural walk.

If you’re planning a picnic for later, we recommend stopping at Gabbani. It’s ideal for picking up fresh, local products for a proper Ticino-style lunch.

Hiking La Via del Ceneri

Ticino doesn’t just offer beautiful villages and scenic viewpoints — it’s also a fantastic region for hiking.

If you’re looking for more ideas, you can also explore our full guide to hiking in Ticino, where we share some of the best trails across the region.

For this itinerary, we chose to hike the historic Via del Ceneri trail.

From Lugano, we took the train to Rivera, where the hike begins.

The starting point is Piazza Ticino, known as the centre point of Ticino. You’ll also find one of the official Grand Tour of Switzerland photo spots here — always fun if you’re collecting them like we do.

About La Via del Ceneri

La Via del Ceneri is more than just a scenic walk. It follows an important historic route through the region.

With the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, Lugano is now connected to the north faster than ever. But up here, you’re walking through the landscape that shaped that connection.

You can read our full Via del Ceneri Hike on our blog.

Late Afternoon: Monte San Salvatore

If you still have some energy left, we highly recommend heading up to Monte San Salvatore.

We decided to go up in the afternoon, mainly because the weather for the next day didn’t look great — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip.

From the top, you get incredible 360° views over Lugano, the lake and the surrounding mountains.

We spent about an hour up there, which felt just right. Enough time to take it all in without rushing.

To reach the very top viewpoint, you’ll need to climb a few steps, but nothing too challenging.

This viewpoint is also included in our ebook, where we’ve collected over 40 viewpoints across Switzerland that are easy to reach — either without hiking or with just a short walk.  It’s perfect if you want the views without committing to a full hike.

Tip:
On weekdays, the last descent can be quite early (around 6pm), so it’s worth checking the timetable in advance.

Looking back, we were so glad we went that day — the next day was completely cloudy.

Sometimes it really is worth just following your instinct.

Day 4: Agno to Caslano & Olive Trail to Gandria

Cycling from Agno to Caslano

We started the day slowly — and honestly, it felt needed after the previous days.

After breakfast, we made our way up to Lugano train station and took the train to Agno, where the bike route begins.

From here, a dedicated cycling and walking path runs along Lake Lugano all the way to Caslano.

This is such an easy and relaxed ride. Perfect for families or if you just want to enjoy the scenery without too much effort.

Along the way, you pass small harbours, quiet lakeside stretches and plenty of spots where you could stop for a swim during the summer months.

If you want more details, we also have a full guide on cycling in Lugano with kids.

Late Afternoon: Olive Grove Path to Gandria

On the way back, we had promised the kids an ice cream in Lugano — but as always, one last idea turned into another highlight.

We decided to explore the Olive Grove Path (Sentiero dell’Olivo).

With our bikes, we followed the lake road through Parco Ciani towards Castagnola. Just before the road starts to climb, a small path leads down towards Lido San Domenico, where the trail begins.

If you’re arriving by car, there is also parking nearby. The path follows the lake for about 1.6 km towards Gandria.

It’s an easy walk, but incredibly beautiful. Especially in the late afternoon when everything feels quieter.

We loved how open the views were along the lake. The kids were busy throwing stones, and we could just enjoy the scenery. There’s something about this path that really feels Mediterranean — or in our case, very much Ticino.

When you reach Gandria, you realise very quickly why it is one of the best places to visit in Ticino. Take some time to explore this small but very charming village.

By now you’ve probably noticed how much there is to explore around Lugano — this is exactly why we created our Ticino Map, so you can see everything in one place.

From here, you have a few options:

  • walk back the same way
  • take the bus back
  • or arrive/return by boat

We chose to walk back, and it felt like the perfect, relaxed end to the day.

Optional Stop on the Way Home: Bellinzona

If you’re travelling back north by train, Bellinzona makes a fantastic stop on the way home.

We visited Castelgrande before heading back and were honestly surprised by how much we loved Bellinzona. The castle walls, dark tunnels and views over the city make it a fun stop for both adults and kids.

If you have more time, Bellinzona is worth a longer visit in its own right. You can also find more ideas in our guide to the best places to visit in Ticino.

Where to Stay in Lugano

This Lugano itinerary works best if you stay near the lake or in Paradiso, where most of the activities are easily accessible.

We chose to stay near Paradiso, which worked perfectly for us. It’s slightly quieter than the centre but still within easy reach of everything — especially if you’re travelling by bike or public transport.

Staying close to the lake makes exploring much easier. You can walk or cycle to places like Parco Ciani, hop on a boat, or quickly reach the funiculars for the surrounding mountains.

If you prefer being right in the middle of it all, Lugano city centre is also a great option, with plenty of restaurants, shops and easy transport connections.

We always use this map to compare locations and find the best area to stay.Everyone has a different perspective of what is the best accommodation in Lugano.

    • Hi
I would say it is the same as in other places of Switzerland.
maybe if you are more in the smaller mountain villages, but in general especially the cities it is the same.
