What is Jungfraujoch?

You may have heard this word over and over again when planning a trip to Switzerland, but what is it actually, and why is everyone hyping over it? Why is it called the “Top of Europe”?

Jungfraujoch is a mountain saddle connecting the peaks of Jungfrau (4,158m) and Mönch (4,107m) in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.
It’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage site called Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.
This includes the Aletsch Arena at the end of the mighty Aletsch Glacier, which is home to Bettmeralp.

Jungfraujoch is a unique year-round mountain destination in Switzerland.

It also holds the name “Top of Europe” referring to the Jungfraujoch railway station (3,454 m), the highest train station in Europe, accessible via an extraordinary journey through tunnels and scenic routes.

In short, Jungfraujoch is an amazing viewing platform that gives you insane views over Switzerland—and hence the name—maybe even over Europe on clear days.

Jungfrau Region, Bernese Oberland – Grindelwald

The beautiful Jungfrau Region in the Bernese Oberland, with the focal points of Interlaken by Lake Brienz or Grindelwald for the mountain routes, is one of the most stunning Swiss alpine regions.
There are so many alpine attractions and activities available, which explains why every year thousands of tourists swarm into these valleys.

Your departure point to reach Jungfraujoch is Grindelwald—worth a visit on its own for so many reasons. From there, you will ride a cable car and a train to Europe’s highest train station. (Read below under “How Best to Visit Jungfraujoch – Step by Step”).

There are many organized day trips from Zürich or Lucerne to Grindelwald and the Jungfrau Region, making it perfect if you don’t want to plan your travels or don’t have much time in Switzerland.

Should You Visit Jungfraujoch in Switzerland?

Before we cover all the logistics and practical information on how best to visit Jungfraujoch, let’s first answer the question: Is a trip worth the hype?

Let’s just say, many Swiss locals have never been to the Top of Europe. The main reason for this, I believe, is the hefty price tag. However, if you’re traveling to Switzerland and want to experience one of the most talked-about mountains (after the Matterhorn in Zermatt), I highly suggest adding a visit to your Swiss itinerary.

One thing is for sure: You will not be disappointed. It may even turn out to be one of the highlights of your travels in Switzerland!

With so many mountain peaks to choose from, make Jungfraujoch one of them to tick off your bucket list.

Furthermore, it is not just a viewpoint—a trip to the world-famous peak called the Top of Europe is truly an experience.

Positive Aspects of Visiting Jungfraujoch

  1. Accessibility for All: Jungfraujoch is accessible to everyone, which makes it an exciting day trip. The infrastructure is designed for people like you and me—non-hikers and those with mobility challenges in mind.
  2. Incredible Altitude: You’ll be standing at nearly 4,000 meters altitude, enjoying breathtaking 360° views over Switzerland’s greatest glacier—the Aletsch Glacier—and hundreds of snowcapped peaks.
  3. No Alpine Experience Needed: All of this is possible without any alpine experience!
  4. More Than a Viewpoint: As mentioned before, Jungfraujoch offers so much more than just stunning views. (Read below: “How Best to Visit Jungfraujoch”).

Negative Aspects of Visiting Jungfraujoch

  1. Crowds: Jungfraujoch is expertly marketed, and there is probably not a single Swiss tour operator in the world that doesn’t offer tickets to the “Top of Europe.” This naturally means crowds. However, most tourists are on a tight schedule, so you’ll experience quieter moments in between the busy pockets. Alternatively, visit during the shoulder season, such as November, to avoid peak crowds.
  2. The Price Tag: Visiting Jungfraujoch is expensive. Without any discounts, tickets cost over CHF 200 per person. (See below for tips on how to travel cheaper.)

How Best to Visit Jungfraujoch

If you’ve made it this far, I’m guessing you’re seriously considering a visit to Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald—great choice!

In this Jungfraujoch Guide, we’ve detailed how we visited the Top of Europe. You’ll find helpful tips, and if you follow our plan, you’ll maximize your time and get the best experience while at Jungfraujoch.

1. The Terminal in Grindelwald – Start Your Journey Here

If you are not yet in Grindelwald, your journey typically begins in Interlaken, a popular base for exploring the Bernese Oberland.
From here, take a train to Grindelwald Terminal train station.

The first part of this epic ride will be a 15-minute journey in the modern Eiger Express gondola, taking you to the Eiger Glacier station at 2,333 meters.

We stopped at the Jungfrau Glacier after our visit to Jungfraujoch on our return trip.

Arriving from Lauterbrunnen

Another option to reach Jungfraujoch is from Lauterbrunnen via the Wengernalpbahn (train).
This scenic route passes through picturesque villages and alpine meadows all the way to Kleine Scheidegg.
From there, change trains and board the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch station.

2. Board the Jungfrau Train

From the Eigergletscher station (or Kleine Scheidegg), there is only a short train ride left to reach the Top of Europe.
Although the journey is entirely inside the mountains Eiger and Mönch, and there’s no view, the knowledge of where you actually are—and how they managed to build this last stretch—is mind-blowing.

Make sure to spend some time reading and studying the incredible story of how this tunnel system was constructed. You can find this information on the Discovery Tour in the Alpine Sensation section.

The Eismeer Station View

The train will make a short 5-minute stop at the Eismeer station viewpoint at 3,160 meters.
This is a view you can only experience on this train.
You’ll essentially be inside the Eigerwand (Eiger Wall), looking out onto the eternal ice. While it’s not an open viewing platform, the quick stop is still well worth it.

Top Things to Do at Jungfraujoch

Once you reach the Top of Europe, there’s no shortage of incredible experiences. Here are the must-see attractions along the Discovery Tour:

The tour is wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly. To enjoy it fully, you’ll need about 1.5 hours from start to finish.

Follow the Discovery tour at Jungfraujoch

1. 360° Cinema

Follow the signs to your first stop: a 360° Cinema, which takes you deep into the glacier and gives you the sensation of flying over the 4,000-meter peaks.

2. Sphinx Terrace – Observatory & Aletsch Glacier

Next stop: the Sphinx. Enter the lift and rise 108 meters in just 25 seconds.
The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest observatories in the world, serves as an international research station for some, but for you today, it’s a place where you can enjoy some of the most stunning views Switzerland has to offer.

In front of you lies the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, surrounded by numerous mountains and 4,000-meter peaks. Did you know the glacier is 22 km long and nearly 1 kilometer thick? Let’s hope we can continue to see this beauty for many more years.

You can also visit the Aletsch Glacier from Bettmeralp, located at the far end of the glacier.

TIP: While standing at the Sphinx, we noticed clouds starting to gather. We decided to skip the indoor activities and head straight to the Glacier Plateau Viewpoint, planning to do the rest afterward. It was a wise decision because the weather really closed in shortly after.

3. Alpine Sensation Tunnel

After visiting the Sphinx, you walk through the 250-meter Alpine Sensation Tunnel, where the history of the Jungfraujoch railway is explained. It’s an incredible achievement, and the museum is a tribute to the people who built this remarkable place.

4. Eispalast – Ice Palace

The Ice Palace is definitely a highlight of the visit. Stepping inside a glacier is always an exciting adventure, but it’s even more thrilling when the interior is beautifully adorned with amazing ice sculptures created by famous artists.

But it’s not just ice sculptures—there are also some familiar faces. See the photos below. And here is a virtual tour of the Ice Palace from our Instagram.

5. Glacier Plateau – 360° Viewpoint

The final attraction at Jungfraujoch is the outdoor Glacier Plateau. At a staggering 3,475 meters in altitude, you’re treated to an incredible view. Wow—take it all in!

Note: It can get extremely cold and windy up here, so make sure you dress appropriately to fully enjoy the experience. Also, it’s covered in snow, so be prepared.
And don’t forget to take that mandatory Instagram photo!

There’s a similar ice palace in Zermatt at the Matterhorn Glacier Palace. This is holding the name of being the World’s Highest Glacier Palace.

Other Things to Do at Jungfraujoch

After the Discovery Tour, you can do some shopping or enjoy lunch at the cozy restaurant. However, reservations are required. When we visited, the restaurant was fully booked. Alternatively, you can have a drink at the bar and soak in the view for a little longer.

Back to Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg

An alternative route back to Grindelwald is via Kleine Scheidegg. We highly recommend this option. Not only will you be able to discover the charming Kleine Scheidegg and its lake, but you’ll also travel back along one of the most beautiful train rides in Switzerland.

The Wengernalp train will slowly make its way down the mountain, giving you plenty of opportunities to capture the Bernese Oberland region in all its glory.

At Kleine Scheidegg

The train connections are typically quite seamless. But if you have time, take a stroll around the area, even down to the lake.

In winter, you can also go sledging down to Grindelwald from here or strap on some snowshoes and walk back down.

There’s also a restaurant if hunger strikes.

Good to Know

From here, you can take the Wengernalp train to Wengen and Lauterbrunnen. This stretch is insanely beautiful, no matter the time of year.

Jungfraujoch in Winter vs. Summer

All the activities mentioned above are available year-round. However, there are some seasonal activities to consider. During the winter months, you can enjoy skiing on the amazing slopes in the Jungfrau region.

For those who enjoy skiing, you might want to test your skills on the world-famous Lauberhorn Downhill Race track, known for its challenging terrain.

Some activities, such as hiking to the Mönchsjochhütte (hut) or sledding at the Snow Fun Park, are only available during the summer months. You can read more about these in the sections below.

Jungfraujoch in Summer

If the valley below is too hot and you’re craving some snow activities, a visit to Jungfraujoch in the summer could be just what you need.

Snow Fun Park – Jungfrau

From mid-May to mid-October, you can enjoy a variety of snow activities at the Snow Fun Park at Jungfraujoch.

Please note that these activities are not included in your regular train ticket for Jungfraujoch Top of Europe and require additional payment depending on the activity you choose. Find more details about prices on their official site here:
Snow Fun Park – Jungfrau

Choose from activities such as:

  • Skiing or Snowboarding
  • Sledding
  • Snow Tubing
For a bit more adrenaline, you can even zipline across the glacier!

Hike to Mönchsjochhütte

If you’re visiting during the summer, hiking to the Mönchsjoch Hut should definitely be on your list. Located at Switzerland’s highest serviced mountain hut, the hike is an experience not to be missed.

The trail begins at Jungfraujoch and takes you along the glacier on a very well-secured path, so there’s no need for glacier equipment. The hike is only about one hour and leads to the Mönchsjoch Hut, where you can enjoy lunch and a unique alpine experience.

Note: If you plan to embark on this trail, good hiking shoes are essential.

Ticket prices can vary depending on the time of year, but typically range between CHF 200 to 260 per person. While this is quite an expensive ticket, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the location is unlike any other in Switzerland.

Discounts and Special Travel Passes

  • Junior Card (ages 6-16): Children with a Junior Card travel free of charge, which is a very welcoming perk.
  • Swiss Travel Pass: With a Swiss Travel Pass, you can receive 25% off the train journey from Grindelwald or Wengen to Jungfraujoch. The Swiss Travel Pass also covers most public transport throughout Switzerland, making it a convenient option for those planning extensive travel within the country.
  • Half Fare Card: With the Swiss Half Fare Card, you can pay 50% of the ticket price, no matter where you start your journey.
  • Regional Passes: If you plan on staying in the Bernese Oberland or Jungfrau Region for several days, it may be worth considering one of the regional passes. However, these can be confusing to calculate in terms of discounts, so a Swiss Travel Pass may be the easier option.

The Swiss Travel Pass guarantees that all public transport (buses, trains, boats, trams) is included, and it also offers some discounts on special journeys like the Jungfraujoch.

Jungfrau Railway – Seat Reservations

During the summer months, Jungfraujoch can get extremely busy, and to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted journey, you may want to consider booking a seat for the last stretch of your journey, from Eiger Glacier Station to Jungfraujoch.

Seat reservations can only be made for this segment, and I recommend adding CHF 10 extra for a guaranteed seat at your chosen time slot. This small additional cost can save you from the hassle of finding a seat during the busy summer months.

Tips for Visiting Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

To make the most of your trip, here are some helpful tips for visiting Jungfraujoch:

  • Book Tickets in Advance: Jungfraujoch is one of Switzerland’s most popular destinations, so securing your tickets early is crucial, especially during peak seasons. It helps you avoid long queues and ensures that you can travel at your preferred time.
  • Weather Check: Clear skies are essential for enjoying the panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier and surrounding peaks. Always check the weather forecast before planning your visit. Cloudy or foggy weather can reduce visibility and impact the experience.
  • Dress Warmly: Temperatures at the summit of Jungfraujoch are much colder than in the valleys, even in summer. Be sure to wear warm layers, sturdy shoes, and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare of the snow.
  • Plan for Altitude: At 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), Jungfraujoch is at a high altitude, and the thinner air can cause shortness of breath or dizziness. Take it slow, stay hydrated, and give yourself time to adjust.
  • Travel Passes: If you plan to explore the region further, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass to save on transportation costs. These passes often offer discounts on train journeys and give you flexibility with your travel.

Conclusion

A visit to Jungfraujoch, also known as the “Top of Europe” offers breathtaking views and a range of activities at one of Switzerland’s highest peaks.

Whether you’re taking the scenic train ride, exploring the Ice Palace, or hiking in summer, it’s an unforgettable experience that can be enjoyed year-round.
