40 Accessible Mountain Viewpoints Across the Swiss Alps
Switzerland is known for its dramatic peaks, glacier landscapes and postcard-perfect valleys — but you don’t need to be a mountaineer to experience them.
Across the Swiss Alps, there are incredible mountain viewpoints that are easily reached by cable car, train, funicular or a short scenic walk. These are places where you step off public transport and find yourself face to face with glaciers, 4,000-metre peaks and panoramic lake views — without committing to a long hike.
From the Bernese Oberland, Central Switzerland, Graubünden, Ticino and the amazing Valais, these accessible mountain views in Switzerland offer high-altitude drama with minimal effort. Many are suitable for families, older travellers, or anyone who prefers comfort over climbing.

8 Best Mountain Views in Switzerland Without Hiking
Below you’ll find a selection of my favourite Swiss mountain viewpoints without hiking — each one tested, experienced and chosen for pure impact. The full list including a private Google map, GPS access points, in depth guides to the region and hotel accommodations is inside my eBook; featuring 40+ of the Best Swiss Viewpoints
1 Gornergrat in Zermatt
If you want drama a beautiful train ride and endless glacier views without effort, this is it.
The Gornergrat cogwheel train will take you from Zermatt along one of the most amazing train ride high up into glacier territory. No walking necessary. Step off the train and you’re standing in front of the Matterhorn with glacier views.
We’ve done this with kids in all the seasons and one time even in trainers. This is really a beautiful trip where you can tick of quite some bucket list moments.
- Extra activity: Oh where should we start, go through our list with 17 amazing things to do in Zermatt
- Where to stay: If you want a special mountain accommodation, choose the Fluhalp Hut, or stay in Zermatt village at Hotel National, which we love a lot.
2 Engelberg – Mount Titlis
Mount Titlis attracts visitors from all over the world, especially those wanting to experience eternal snow and stand on a glacier without a serious climb.
The rotating Titlis Rotair cable car alone makes the journey memorable. Within minutes you’re transported from green meadows in Engelberg to a world of ice and rock at over 3,000 metres. It’s one of the easiest ways to experience true high-alpine scenery in Switzerland.
One thing I love about Titlis in summer is the contrast: you can leave the valley in shorts and find yourself walking through snow at the summit. And if you’re visiting from abroad without winter gear, you can rent snow boots and warm clothing at the top.
Mount Titlis is a year-round destination. In summer, the glacier fun park opens for snow activities like tubing and sit-skiing. In winter, that same area becomes ski terrain. Either way, it’s one of the most accessible glacier viewpoints in Switzerland — and absolutely worth including if you want dramatic mountain views without hiking.
- Extra activity: You have to stay a few days and explore Engelberg with all its glory.
- Where to stay: One beautiful places is either up at the Berghotel Trübsee or down in town at the Hotel Terrase
3 Stanserhorn – Lake Lucerne
If you’re travelling with kids — or anyone who loves a little adventure without the effort — this one is special.
The journey up is half the experience. You start with a charming historic funicular and then switch to the CabriO, the world’s first open-air double-decker cable car. Standing on the upper deck, wind in your face, as the landscape drops away below you. This already feels like an adventure before you even reach the top.
At the summit, you’re rewarded with wide-open views over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Swiss Alps. There’s space to wander, a panoramic terrace, and a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling views. No hike required. Just step out and take it all in.
It’s one of those mountain viewpoints in Switzerland that feels high alpine — but is incredibly easy to access.
There is a short loop hike if you do want to get some steps in and a nice BBQ place. Maybe bring a sausage along.
- Extra Activity: Bring a picnic basket and have a BBQ and hike the short loop trail at Stanserhorn
- Where to stay: The choice is big. We have listed a great hotels around the Lake Lucerne region

4 Grindelwald First
If you want a mountain view with a touch of thrill — without hiking for hours — maybe the First is what you’re looking for.
A gondola from Grindelwald takes you straight up to First. From there, the Cliff Walk hugs the rock face and leads you to a suspended platform overlooking the dramatic peaks of the Bernese Oberland. While standing there you’re looking right at the Eiger Nordwand.
Yes, it feels adventurous.
Yes, your heart might beat a little faster.
But it’s completely manageable — even with younger kids and grandparents.
The views stretch across rugged alpine terrain, glaciers in the distance and that classic Grindelwald valley below. You can stop for lunch, sit in the sun, or simply soak in one of the most dramatic Swiss mountain panoramas you’ll see without a hike.
It’s proof that “no hiking” does not mean “less impressive.”
- Extra activity: If you even want more views why not head up Jungfrau Joch also called Top of Europe.Or if you like to do a short trail, hike to Bachalpsee.
- Where to stay: We loved our stay at Sunstar Arosa very much. Alternatively if this one is full check out Hotel Spinne, their pool is amazing.

5 Diavolezza – St.Moritz
Diavolezza feels wild and remote — yet it’s surprisingly simple to reach.
A cable car lifts you straight into high alpine terrain in the Bernina region near St. Moritz. Step off at the top and you’re standing in front of glacier views that look almost untouched.
The Bernina range stretches across the horizon. Ice fields shimmer below. The air feels thinner, quieter, sharper.
And yet — you didn’t hike for hours to get there.
There’s a panoramic terrace, a mountain restaurant, and short optional walks if you feel like stretching your legs. But even if you don’t move another step, this is one of the most powerful accessible mountain viewpoints in Switzerland.
It’s raw, dramatic, and completely unforgettable. The last few times we’ve been up there we always built a small snowman, even during a summer visit.
- Extra activity: Have a stroll around Lake Sils, especially beautiful during the autumn
- Where to stay: Definitely Hotel Saratz in Pontresina
6 Monte San Salvatore
If you want that Mediterranean-meets-Alps feeling, Monte San Salvatore in the southern most Swiss canton of Ticino delivers.
A funicular takes you from Lugano straight up to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Ticino. Within minutes, you’re looking down over Lake Lugano, with layers of rolling hills and distant peaks stretching into Italy.
It feels completely different from the high glacier drama of central Switzerland — softer light, warmer colours, palm trees below and alpine ridges above.
There’s a panoramic terrace that require a few steps, a small museum, and space to wander without committing to a proper hike. It’s an easy win if you’re staying in Lugano and want one of the most beautiful mountain views in southern Switzerland without the extreme climb.
Proof that not all epic Swiss views require hiking boots.
- Extra activities: Combine this trip with a few days in Lugano
- Where to stay: We love to stay at Hotel Albergo in Losone or for a more relaxed stay choose Campofelice Camping Village and book a river cabin.

7 Piz Nair St. Moritz
At 3,056 metres, Piz Nair rises high above St. Moritz — and yet it’s surprisingly easy to reach.
You take the funicular up to Corviglia, then continue by gondola, and suddenly you’re standing in proper high-alpine territory. No summit grind. No steep ascent. Just step out and the Engadine opens up around you.
From the top, you can look down over St. Moritz and across to Pontresina, with jagged Alpine peaks stretching endlessly into the distance. On a clear day, the visibility feels almost unreal — crisp, sharp, endless.
And if you’re not in a rush, grab a table at Restaurant Piz Nair. Sitting on the sunny terrace with that kind of view in front of you is exactly why I love finding these accessible mountain viewpoints in Switzerland.
Big altitude. Big scenery. Minimal effort.
- Extra Activities: If you like mountain biking bring your bike to Corviglia an ride back down to St. Moritz. We did it with the kids and loved it. Lots of marmots on the trail.
- Where to stay: In Pontresina in the beautiful Hotel Saratz,

8 Mont Fort – 4 Vallées
If you want one of the most powerful mountain views in Switzerland without hiking — Mont Fort is hard to beat.
At 3,330 metres, it’s the highest point in the 4 Vallées in Valais. And on a clear day, the summit view feels almost overwhelming in the best possible way. You’re surrounded by giants: Mont Blanc in the distance, the unmistakable shape of the Matterhorn (Cervin), and a skyline filled with 4,000-metre peaks stretching as far as your eyes can see.
This is the kind of panorama you’d normally train for. The kind you’d expect to earn after a long alpine ascent.
But here, you don’t. A series of cable cars takes you straight up into high alpine terrain.
It’s raw. It’s dramatic. And yet it’s completely accessible.
Don’t miss out on one of Switzerland’s most spectacular high-altitude viewpoints without turning it into an expedition.
- Extra Activity: At the summit you find the worlds highest zipline. Would you dare?
- Where to stay: Treat yourself to one of the stunning chalets in the Alpine Comfort’s portfolio. From 2 persons to large family chalets.

Why You Don’t Need to Hike for Incredible Mountain Views in Switzerland
Over the years I kept getting messages on our 1:1 calls, like:
“We’re visiting Switzerland but we’re not big hikers. Can we still see the Alps properly?”
The answer is yes. Absolutely yes.
I’ve stood on high mountain terraces with my kids eating fries while glaciers shimmered in front of us.
Together we watched my parents quietly take in a 360° view without having to climb 800 metres first.
We arrived at viewpoints by train that felt just as dramatic as any summit hike.
So instead of sending people up long trails, I started collecting the viewpoints that deliver maximum impact with minimal effort.
And I put them all into one practical, easy-to-use guide.
Just in case you like to hike to the best mountain viewpoints then check out these most beautiful hiking trails there are in Switzerland. We even covered great family friendly hikes, in Valais for you.

Important Travel Tips Before Visiting Switzerland
How to get around Switzerland
To visit some of these Swiss mountain viewpoints you need to get around. Switzerland has an amazing public transport system and if you choose NOT to rent a car, you can still visit these beautiful Swiss mountain views.
Download the SBB APP this helps you plan your timings correctly. My second suggestion is to get a SWISS TRAVEL PASS. One pass for all transportation such as bus, train, boat and some of the cable car/gondola systems are included as well.
The Swiss travel pass is valid from 3-15 days and worth it if you travel Switzerland by train.

Travelling with Peace of Mind – Travel Insurance
While Switzerland is extremely safe, mountain travel, high-altitude viewpoints and changing alpine weather always carry small risks — especially if you’re travelling internationally.
Medical care in Switzerland is excellent, but it can be expensive without proper coverage. If you’re planning to use cable cars, visit glacier platforms or move between regions by train, having travel insurance gives real peace of mind.
I personally recommend choosing a policy that includes:
- Emergency medical assistance
- Trip cancellation cover
- 24/7 support access
- Digital claims handling

FAQ – Mountain Views in Switzerland Without Hiking
Can you see the Swiss Alps without hiking?
Yes — absolutely. Many of the best mountain views in Switzerland are easily accessible by cable car, funicular or train. You don’t need to complete a strenuous hike to experience glacier views, 4,000-metre peaks or panoramic lake scenery. Across the country, mountain railways and gondolas make high-alpine viewpoints accessible to families, older travellers and anyone who prefers comfort over climbing.
What is the easiest mountain view in Switzerland?
Some of the easiest mountain viewpoints include places like Gornergrat in Zermatt, Harder Kulm in Interlaken or Mount Titlis in Engelberg — all reachable directly by train or cable car. In most cases, you step off the lift and are immediately rewarded with panoramic views, without needing to hike further.
Are Swiss cable cars worth it for the views?
Yes — Swiss cable cars are often the easiest way to experience dramatic alpine scenery. They provide access to high-altitude terraces, glacier platforms and 360° viewpoints that would otherwise require hours of hiking. While tickets can be expensive, the views and accessibility make them well worth it for many travellers.
Are these mountain viewpoints suitable for families and elderly travellers?
Most of the viewpoints featured in this guide are suitable for families and older visitors. Many have stable platforms, restaurants, and minimal walking required. However, weather conditions and altitude should always be considered, especially for very young children or anyone sensitive to heights.
What is the best time of year to visit mountain viewpoints in Switzerland?
Mountain views in Switzerland are spectacular year-round. Summer offers green valleys and clear hiking trails, while winter transforms the Alps into a snow-covered landscape with incredible visibility. Some high-altitude cable cars operate year-round, but weather conditions can occasionally affect access, so it’s always best to check before visiting.
